Film Festivals, and pretty much any type of large public gathering, continue to be untenable as the Coronavirus pandemic rages across the country, meaning many events are still organizing alternative events. This has resulted in quite a few cancellations of anticipated events, and online options that have replaced in-person attendance. There have been some unexpected benefits as well, however, as Fantastic Fest 2020 has announced that they will be making their online screenings available for free to everyone in the U.S.
Founded by the Alamo Drafthouse and located in Austin, Texas, Fantastic Fest is typically an eight day event, filled with screenings of films from both well established and unknown directors. The event focuses on genre films like horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and often has well known personalities like the Wachowskis involved. In person, the festival featured a great deal of special events, including secret screenings, where the audience would not be told what they were going to see until moments before the movie began.
Of course, things have had to change around a bit in light of the move to an online event. Those who wish to watch the screenings planned just need to download the new Alamo On Demand app, and from September 24 to October 1, several screenings will be available to watch for free at home. The complete list of screenings is currently available on the Fantastic Fest Website, and includes films like Cyst, The Queen of Black Magic, a secret screening, and a selection of other genre films. There will also be some alternate showcases, like a segment for short films, an animation showcase, and the Leonard Maltin Game Challenge.
It is worth noting that the Alamo Drafthouse is still dealing with a serious controversy in the form of decades of sexual assault allegations coming to light. While the story originally broke in about 2008 that the company had covered up decades of harassment concerns and unsafe work environments, a recent report indicated that the company has failed to make any real systemic change to address the problems. The filmmakers and movies being displayed at Fantastic Fest are not liable for the Alamo Drafthouse’s management issues, but the information may be worth considering for those who are concerned about the ethical implications of supporting an Alamo Drafthouse backed event.
Fantastic Fest 2020 will begin September 24 and end on October 1.
