The Final Fantasy series features a multitude of memorable characters. Nearly every protagonist’s default weapon features a sword. However, their personalities all come as differently as their weapon choices.
In this particular case, the SeeD mercenary, Squall does battle against the ace player of the Zanarkand Abes, Tidus. Despite their contrast in personalities, both swordsmen fought an epic struggle to save the world. Among their different choice of weapons, however, their fighting styles also showcase few similarities.
10 Squall – SeeD Training
Tidus lived his life as an athlete. Squall, meanwhile, lived his as a mercenary. Growing up as a mercenary cadet of SeeD, Final Fantasy VIII“s protagonist has military training.
When Tidus was learning to lift and hold a sword given to him by Auron, Squall was going on missions to fight to the death. Tidus proved that he can fight. However, Squall’s training would give him an advantage.
9 Tidus – Agility
As mentioned earlier, Tidus lived as a Blitzball star. This means he has conditioned his body to a high competitive level. In other words, he’s as quick as anyone could be.
Tidus is not only an incredibly fast fighter in Final Fantasy X but the Dissidia titles as well. Squall has plenty of fighting training, but Tidus’ Quick Hit would make Squall likely give up the first move off the bat.
8 Squall – Guardian Force
All SeeD members can summon Guardian Forces. Known as GFs, these summons include powerful beasts. All the party members in Final Fantasy VIII can use any GF.
Tidus never learned to summon. That gift belongs to Yuna. If Squall is allowed to use GFs in battle he would have an easy advantage.
7 Tidus – Blitz Ace
At long-range, Tidus wins against Squall. Blitz Ace features Tidus’ skill with a Blitzball. The highest level Overdrive for Tidus includes the Jecht Shot. While in Final Fantasy X, Yuna, Rikku, or Lulu throw the ball to him, he can solo the move in Dissidia.
This powerful move can be used from afar to snipe opponents. Squall lacks inherent projectile abilities. As such, he would be forced to move up close.
6 Squall – Gunblade
If Squall moves in close, he has the edge in damage. Unlike any other character, Squall can use the Revolver Gunblade. This allows him to strike with explosive damage after a slash.
Similar to mechanics used in Super Mario RPG and Legend of Dragoon, the player need only press the button in order to use pull the trigger after the slash attack. In terms of default weapons, Tidus would use Brotherhood vs. Squall’s Gunblade, and Tidus would lose in this scenario.
5 Tidus – Haste
In terms of innate abilities, Tidus once again has the edge. Haste allows him to speed up his turns. His already noteworthy agility would boost past Squall’s own abilities. However, this comes at a cost of MP and could not be used forever.
Haste has proven crucial throughout the series’ history. In Final Fantasy, those using Haste could turn the tides in battle. This powerful Time Magic ability could turn Tidus’ edge against Squall if he did not Draw the ability himself.
4 Squall – Blasting Zone
On the subject of range, Tidus has a natural edge with Blitz Ace. However, Squall’s Limit Break, Blasting Zone, can cover a terrifying range. This ability grows the Gunblade to a much larger size.
Using energy, Squall loses no speed when using the weapon. In Final Fantasy VIII, it covers a massive range against opponents. Even in Kingdom Hearts, this ability is referenced when Squall uses his desperation attack.
3 Tidus – Energy Rain
Another powerful Tidus ability, Energy Rain spreads projectiles across the field. This AoE attack outclasses most of Squall’s own abilities. At the very least, it matches Blasting Zone.
Tidus can worry less about engaging Squall up close and personal and rely on Energy Rain. Once again, it proves Tidus has the edge in distance.
2 Squall – Lionheart
If all else fails, Squall can use his own powerful Lionheart Limit Break. The final Limit Break in Squall’s kit, this powerful, decisive move functions similarly to Omnislash. Using a multitude of powerful slashes, this will finish any opponent.
Squall can obtain this Renzokuken ability when he obtains the ultimate Gunblade. Once he obtains Lionheart, he can do thousands of damage in one attack. However, as mentioned, he can only use it with the Lionheart equipped.
1 Tidus – Break Damage Limit
With that being said, if both characters use their ultimate weapons, Tidus can break the damage limit while equipped with Caladbolg. By doing so, he can exceed the 9999 damage cap. This can bring his damage all the way up to 99,999.
Final Fantasy X introduced this mechanic. Players who unlocked the ultimate weapons could also garner a sigil to break the damage limit. However, the difference-maker comes from whether or not ultimate weapons are allowed to begin with.
