There have been more than a fair number of rumors saying that Nintendo may be making a Switch Pro or a Switch with 4K capability. But in the past week or so, even more rumors and teases have started cropping up. But whereas previous teases or rumors have stemmed from second-hand sources, this one comes from a developer.
Some of the reports of Nintendo making a 4K-capable Switch have come from trust-worthy sources at Bloomberg, with its most recent report claiming that Nintendo has been asking developers to make their games 4K-ready. It sounds like Nintendo may be planning on releasing a more powerful Switch so as to not be completely left in the graphical dust that the impending PS5 and Xbox Series S & X could leave it in.
A new tip suggesting this possibility comes by way of developer FDG Entertainment, developer and publisher of Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom. Recently, the company recently confirmed that the side-scrolling platformer will receive an update for the game to support 4K and 120FPS on next-gen consoles. Naturally, this led to some jealousy from Switch fans, like Twitter user @ninjacape. FDG responded, surprisingly, with a tweet that has led to much speculation:
FDG had nothing else to say to the dozens of tweets in response asking for confirmation from the developer, so its claim should very much be taken with a grain of salt. It could be that FDG is one of the aforementioned developers Nintendo has asked to be 4K-ready, or FDG could just be yanking the collective gaming world’s chain.
That is not the only sign that a possible 4K-ready Switch Pro may be in development. Nintendo also recently filed a patent for a Joy-Con that does not have the traditional slide on track on the side, suggesting that this Joy-Con is intended for a non-portable Switch. If the Switch Lite is slightly less powerful and handheld only, then it stands to reason that a Switch Pro would be slightly more powerful and be TV only.
Even if Nintendo does not have a Switch Pro on the horizon, the company will certainly have no trouble making money in the foreseeable future. Reports claim that Nintendo intends to increase Switch production to an even higher degree than it currently is at to meet the double-whammy of the upcoming holiday-season during a year where staying inside is encouraged due to the Coronavirus epidemic. Regardless of its plans, Nintendo certainly has a successful and interesting near future.
