With a new PS5 event set to take place on Wednesday, many are hoping for even more reveals. Some have leaped to recent tweets from Cory Barlog as a sign of an pending God of War reveal, while others have putted at rumors and leaks about the PS5’s price and release date. Of course, no one knows where and when announcements like these will appear, which makes the latest leak of Saints Row 5 all the more curious.
As with all leaks, it should be taken with a grain of salt, as its source cannot be confirmed. However, when a fake leaker “reveals” a ton of details, it’s usually easy to see through it as something fake. However, this Saints Row 5 leak actually makes some sense, and nothing stands out as a red flag.
While many asked where Saints Row 5 would take place after SR4, this leak gives a surprisingly succinct answer. It continues on from SR3, with SR4 and Gat Out of Hell being retconned as a Saints TV show. Given their popularity, it actually makes some sense that they would have their own TV show, and the leak even highlights that there are no superpowers in this game presumably because this show made superheroes out of the Saints.
In this continuation, the Saints have become an evil corporate empire, with them being described as “soulless.” Part of this is due to Johnny’s death, which is an interesting and realistic twist of fate. As a new protagonist, players will be taking on the Saints including fan-favorite characters like the Boss, while facing off with other gangs like the Wolf Pack. The Boss wears a mask to muffle their voice in order to hide their appearance in order to allow players to see them as they wish. It appears it’ll be some battle of sorts over Stilwater, which has expanded to include a countryside and new islands.
Basically, players are designed to see the Saints from the average joe angle, where their violent acts have come at a cost to so many, but they have often been glorified. There are multiple character customization options, with a slider for every body part and bodily censorship similar to Saints Row 3. Weapon customization is said to be improved, it is said to have 4-player co-op, graphics comparable to Saints Row 3 Remastered, and a style of free roam multiplayer not unlike Grand Theft Auto Online.
Officially, next to nothing is known about Saints Row 5, but there have been details that give this “leak” the bare minimum of credibility. For example, while many initially thought SR3 Remastered was Volition’s promised Saints Row announcement for 2020, Volition did explicitly reaffirm Saint Row 5‘s development. Because of this and the dwindling time, a proper reveal coming soon isn’t out there. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be at the PS5 event on Wednesday, but it’s not impossible either.
Secondly, while the leaker suggested a reveal could happen soon, they also seemingly emphasized that it is a 2021-2022 release date. Reports have indicated that Saints Row 5 may have been internally delayed, so once again, this lines up.
Again, it’s worth mentioning that drawing these connections is the bare minimum. This could easily be made up by someone tired of waiting for Saints Row 5 news, but if that’s the case, they took the time and care to really create a believable leak. After all, it is indeed believable, meaning some fans may be excited to see if this comes to fruition soon. Fans should always temper expectations when it comes to leaks, but it’ll be interesting to see if something comes from this or if it eventually fizzles out.
Saints Row 5 is in development.
