Sony May Have Big Surprise PS5 Game Announcements for Showcase Event

Sony is holding its next PlayStation 5 showcase this upcoming Wednesday, September 16, and to say it’s highly anticipated would be an understatement. PlayStation fans are hoping for news regarding the PS5‘s price and release date, as well as pre-order information. But Sony has also confirmed that there will be updates regarding both first-party and third-party PS5 games, and fans are already latching onto clues that Sony may also have some major game announcements left to make, on top of everything else.

One tweet, in particular, is being shared among PlayStation fans under the belief that it’s indicative of some major announcements pending. The tweet comes from PlayStation senior manager of sound design Jeremie Voillot. Voillot said in a tweet that he’s excited for Wednesday’s event, as even employees “don’t get to see everything.” He goes on to say that he’s sure that even he will be surprised by what will be shown.

Fans are running wild with the idea that Sony’s got secrets so big that they’re not even shared with senior PlayStation staff. Obviously, the secrecy isn’t necessarily indicative of anything at all. It’s just standard practice to keep information on a need-to-know basis leading up to such a big event. But the idea that PlayStation might have some more major announcements in-store isn’t without merit, the tweet by Voillot just isn’t evidence of it.

Stronger evidence would be the myriad rumors throughout 2020 regarding a new Silent Hill game being developed within Sony. There were even rumors that Sony was planning to announce the game during its June PlayStation Meeting, but that it was delayed. There are no such firm rumors regarding a Silent Hill announcement on Wednesday, but insiders to say it’s a distinct possibility.

Recent Twitter activity by God of War Game Director Cory Barlog even has fans speculating about a God of War 2 announcements. Barlog briefly changed his Twitter header to a God of War image, posted a series of God of War-related tweets, and otherwise posted somewhat cryptically. Again, no clear evidence that Barlog was teasing anything, but PlayStation fans are excited and love to speculate.

Ultimately, PlayStation fans are in the same position they’d be without all the speculation. It’s safe to assume that there will be new announcements regarding the PS5, it’s safe to assume there will be announcements regarding previously revealed games, and it’s safe to say there will be other announcements, too. But rather than endlessly speculating, it might be best to wait for Wednesday and to experience the show for itself without any unreasonable expectations.

The PS5 is set to release holiday 2020.
