Valorant, the competitive multiplayer shooter, is still somewhat limited when it comes to content. The game launched just three months ago and while Riot definitely provided a polished gameplay experience, getting the game into players’ hands was a priority. One area of the game that does seem somewhat limited is Valorant‘s maps. And this issue is exacerbated by a “bug” that often causes maps to repeat. Luckily, it seems Riot is aware of this issue and has a fix planned.
The reason why the repeating map issue is a “bug” is that there’s nothing actually broken in Valorant. Maps repeating is just a consequence of how Valorant chooses maps for each match. To the best of players’ knowledge, Valorant uses simple randomization to pick maps. The result is that sometimes, rarely, players will get the same map over and over again. As fun as Valorant may be regardless of the map, Riot obviously wants to keep things fresh as much as possible to keep players invested.
To that effect, Valorant‘s game director has now confirmed on Twitter that Riot is going to make a change. With no real bug to fix, Riot will have to develop a new solution that ensures maps aren’t repeated like they currently can be. That doesn’t mean that maps won’t be repeated at all, however. The change will apparently only make Valorant‘s automated map selector “less likely” to choose the same map after a match’s completion.
It deserves to be repeated, though, that a large part of Riot’s problem here isn’t the map selection RNG. It’s just that Valorant only has four maps in total. It’s all but inevitable that maps are going to repeat themselves when there are only three other options. And in rare cases, they’ll repeat 3 or more times. This is an issue that could be solved by adding more maps, though that’d obviously take much more time and effort than whatever solution Riot’s currently working on.
Building off the idea that having just four maps is exacerbating the issue, there’s another problem beyond that. That problem being that some maps are worse than others. It’s kind of funny, but in the Twitter replies for the map rotation changes a lot of Valorant players are complaining specifically about the map Split being repeated. Getting the same map over and over may not be as much of a problem as getting a map that the player dislikes.
Regardless, Riot making a change to how maps rotate between match queues will certainly be welcomed by Valorant‘s playerbase. And hopefully, the addition of new maps in the future will further solve the problem.
Valorant is available now on PC.
