Layers of Fear Developer Wants to be ‘Blumhouse of the Games Industry’

Fans of the horror movie genre are likely familiar with Blumhouse Productions. The film production company has supplanted itself as a big name in the horror industry. Video game developer Bloober Team has revealed that it wants to be the next Blumhouse, but within the world of gaming.

Bloober Team is the developer behind quite a few spine-tingling horror titles. The company first broke out in the genre with Layers of Fear, and currently is developing a title named The Medium. The games may not blow players away with gigantic setpiece moments or jaw-dropping graphics, but the moments of pure eerie gameplay and jumpscares still abound, and all within an affordable budget for the developer. That is the point with Bloober Team wanting to be the next Blumhouse Productions.

Bloober Team has made some of the best horror games over the past few years. Blumhouse Productions, meanwhile, it is well known for movies like The Purge, Insidious, and Get Out. The films are created with a low-budget, which allows the production team to make movies frequently. Although not every movie is a critical success, the horror industry is often beloved even when the films aren’t critically acclaimed. Obviously, Bloober Team would prefer to make games that are critically successful, but it seems like a decent idea to create horror games with regularity with a lower budget that still scratch the itch for fans of the genre.

From the first day we talked about [making] horror games, we said we wanted to be the Blumhouse of the games industry

While Blumhouse Productions has created some classic horror films, the scary games created by Blooper Team have also had genuine success, with the upcoming The Medium being a launch title for Xbox Series X/S and looking horrifying. Just like Blair Witch and Layers of Fear, made by Bloober team, The Medium will be available on Xbox Game Pass. The developer has been able to create five horror games in the last four years, which means it has been pumping out creepy titles at a rate much faster than most small development teams like itself.

Video game development can cost a lot, especially for AAA style titles. It seems like the middle of the pack style of game dropped off in this generation, with only AAA and Indie games finding success. The horror industry, however, just like with movies, may be a great place to create lower-budget titles that sell well and players enjoy.

Blair Witch was relatively well-received, with a 67 as the Metacritic score for the Xbox One version. The Bloober Team games have seemed to have improved with each new entry, and The Medium looks skin-crawlingly interesting. The developer is hoping to create a space where players can enjoy entries into the horror genre frequently. Bloober Team can create titles at a low cost for the development team, and with the entries also being available in Xbox Game Pass, they are available for a budget price for gamers as well.
