Rumor: PS5 Price Point Leaked By Spanish Retailers | Game Rant

With Microsoft having already announced the Xbox Series X price and release date, all eyes are now on Sony. The company has announced a special PS5 Showcase event on Wednesday, September 16, where it is expected to officially announce the PS5 price and release date, but in the meantime, it seems a Spanish retailer may have beaten it to the punch.

As posted on ResetEra, a Spanish retailer has a list of console SKUs. The list names off various Nintendo Switch consoles, but it also has a pair of codenamed consoles as well. The consoles in question, AUREA and ENIGMA, are listed at €499 and €399, respectively. Based on how worldwide pricing has typically worked for video game consoles, that would translate to $499 and $399, which just so happen to be the suspected price points for the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition.

Numerous sources and “leaks” have pointed to the $499 and $399 price points for the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. If some reports are to be believed, though, Sony originally planned on releasing its next-generation consoles at higher price points, but plans changed after Microsoft announced the Xbox Series X and S price points. Microsoft’s announcement reportedly caused Sony to slash its planned PS5 prices, bringing the standard PS5 in line with the Xbox Series X, and making the digital-only PS5 just $100 more expensive than the Xbox Series S.

Between now and Wednesday, fans are likely to see more PS5 price point leaks, and it will be difficult to determine which are accurate and which are completely made up. However, the PS5 Showcase event on September 16 at 1:00pm PT should finally bring an end to the speculation. Sony hasn’t actually outright said that it will be announcing the PS5 price at the event, but it would be shocking if it didn’t at this point.

If Sony does announce the PS5 price and release date during the PS5 Showcase event as predicted, then one has to imagine that the PS5 pre-order date will be announced as well. In the past, Sony said that it would give fans a head’s up in regards to when they will be able to pre-order a console for themselves, but it remains to be seen just how far advance the notice will be.

In the meantime, the only absolute guarantee that fans can expect from the PS5 Showcase on September 16 is that they’ll get to see PS5 games. Sony has said that the event will focus on PS5 launch title games, in addition to some PS5 games planned for beyond the launch window. Fans should be able to expect a new look at PS5 games that were previously announced, as well as get their first look at  brand new, never-before-seen titles.
