World of Warcraft – What Is The Threads of Fate Leveling System?

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is changing life in Azeroth is some of the most significant ways the community has ever seen the MMO evolve since it’s launch all the way back in 2004. The game is receiving a level squish for the first time, which will massively change the way that players level up new characters from 1-60 (instead of 120 or higher) going forward. This will have some big impacts on new players and (more frequently) on alts.

The level squish will definitely impact the way that leveling new characters happens in pretty major ways. As a new character kicks off their adventure, they will play through a new starting zone for the first 10 levels and then decide which of the eras/zones they want to play through for levels 11-50. This means a player could in theory play through the starting zone and then jump to The Broken Isles and level 11-50 in just the Legion area thanks to some Chromie magic. Some fans are concerned that this ruins the immersion/story of the game, but after more than 15 years of World of Warcraft, it was getting to be a pretty big ask to send every alt through every expansion’s content.

As it turns out, leveling alts is changing for the Shadowlands content as well. After a player has hit level 60 with one character, any new level 50 characters heading into Shadowlands has the option to decide between two options: Replaying the Story or the Threads of Fate. The Threads of Fate is a brand new option in WoW and provides a pretty interesting option for players who want to get alts up to max level without working through all of the zone’s story content multiple times.

Here is the official descriptions for each of the two options…

Level up by doing world quests, side quests, bonus objectives, and dungeons.

Main storyline quests will be skipped and you will choose your covenant immediately.

You will have access to all Shadowlands zones except the Maw.

This choice is final and cannot be undone.

Level up by playing through the main Shadowlands storyline, just as you did on your first character.

You will move zone by zone through the narrative arc before reaching level 60 and selecting a covenant.

If you change your mind, you can return to the Fatescribe at any time to choose to follow the Threads of Fate.

In terms of impact on players, it’s hard to argue against providing options. This choice puts the power into the hands of players and allows them to decide what sort of alt leveling they would prefer. One early argument for playing through the storyline again from users on the beta servers is that the story provides more opportunities to experiment with each Covenant’s powers. These will vary in usefulness from class to class, so in theory it could be difficult to select the appropriate class for an alt without getting enough time having a trial run with each. Aside from that potential issue, the rest seems pretty straightforward.

At this point it seems very clear the choice is final and cannot be undone. It will be interesting to see if that changes at any point in the future (although it does seem unlikely). Ultimately the best path for each alt is up to every individual player and Blizzard has likely made a pretty smart decision here in putting the choice into their hands.

Be sure to check back in the coming weeks as more details about Shadowlands emerge. Until then, For the Horde!

World of Warcraft is available now for PC. At this point, World of Warcraft Shadowlands releases on October 26 or 27 (depending on time zone) for PC.
