Ewan McGregor Says He’s All Set to Start Shooting Kenobi Next Spring

Ewan McGregor appears to be in high spirits concerning his highly anticipated return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The upcoming series based on his character from the Star Wars films is set to start shooting next year and McGregor says he’s excited for the show’s possibilities.

The currently unnamed project was officially announced by Disney in 2019 to stream on Disney+, further confirming McGregor’s involvement shortly afterward. While Disney has given few plot details, McGregor has mentioned in interviews that it will be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Whether this means Obi-Wan had some unrevealed adventures during that time or perhaps that the show will be a David Lynch-ian dive into the character’s psyche alone on a desert planet, that’s anyone’s guess at this point.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, and following his unfortunate admission that he had little new info to give, McGregor shared his own thoughts on the character and why he’s so excited to return to the role of Obi-Wan. He remarked on how he’s much closer now to the same age Alec Guinness was when he played the role in the original Star Wars trilogy, saying “that was always the fun part about playing Obi-Wan Kenobi, for me, was to try and study Alec Guinness and think about maybe how he would have behaved in these scenes as a younger man. So now I’ll be a bit closer and it’ll be nice to sort of bridge that gap. It’s really exciting.”

While McGregor technically most recently played Obi-Wan Kenobi via a short voice-only cameo in 2015’s The Force Awakens, he hasn’t returned to the role on screen since Revenge of the Sith in 2003. The character himself, however, has been a regular fixture in various Star Wars media since then, with veteran voice actor James Arnold Taylor playing Kenobi in the majority of these appearances. Between the 3 main actors who have embodied Obi-Wan throughout Star Wars history, each iteration has its fans, and McGregor is eager to answer that call.

The Kenobi series is set to be directed by Deborah Chow, who recently helmed two well-received episodes of Disney’s successful Star Wars show, The Mandalorian. Earlier this year, writer Joby Harold (executive producer of John Wick: Chapter 3), joined the project as well. Due to obvious reasons, production on the series has stalled, but McGregor says they expect to begin shooting in spring of 2021.

It’s difficult to say whether this show will be a worthwhile watch for everyone. On the outside, some might see similar problems to Solo: A Star Wars Story, where a chunk of audiences felt it wasn’t a story that needed telling. But so far, it seems to have some stellar talent behind it, and Ewan McGregor’s return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi might alone be enough to justify its existence. No telling until it happens, but even the most stone-faced fan is likely to crack a grin when that first “hello there” pierces the audience.
