Doom fans should start saving up, because Limited Run Games has announced limited physical editions of the re-release of Doom 64 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, coming this fall.
Id Software launched a digital version of Doom 64 for consoles earlier in the year with a new chapter not featured in the original game. These new physical versions will come in two flavors, with a Standard Edition and the limited release of a Classic Edition for both consoles, featuring exclusive some cool bonuses, including a special homage to the original N64 release.
The Classic Edition includes a commemorative Nintendo 64 cartridge, which while just a replica and not functioning, the cartridge will be life size with the Doom 64 logo etched on the front. The Classic edition also includes a double-sided 18″x 24″ poster featuring classic enemies from the game on both sides and a booklet with behind-the-scenes interviews. All of the bonus items and game case will be collected in a Classic Edition Retro Box.
Meanwhile, PS4 and Nintendo Switch owners who own copies of Doom 1 and 2 are now able to use the gyro functions of both consoles’ controllers. Earlier in the year, both Doom 1 and 2 received an update allowing native widescreen support and Gyro aiming in both games. Players will be able to use Joy-cons and the DualShock 4 to fine tune the aiming in the game as they navigate the Gates of Hell, allowing players to look one direction while moving another, something the original 90s games never allowed.
The original Doom just keeps getting ported onto everything. While releasing on modern consoles in 2019, the classic 90s FPS has oddly been brought over to ATM machines, Apple watches, and modern printers, but the latest device sure takes the cake. Twitter user @foone, who is notorious for porting games to odd devices brought over the id Software classic to a pregnancy test screen, allowing the game to auto-run on the device.
Id Software has been pretty busy with the Doom franchise, in addition to bringing over the classic games to modern consoles, the developer has been promoting Doom Eternal‘s upcoming DLC, The Ancient Gods. launching on October 20. The new DLC is split into 2 parts, telling a new story of the Doomslayer taking on a new unholy enemy that threatens Earth. Announced at QuakeCon 2020, the content will be the first paid DLC for the game as Doom Eternal has received several free DLC updates focusing on the game’s multiplayer modes with seasonal content.
Pre-orders for both physical editions of Doom 64 begin on September 25 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
