Tyler “Ninja” Blevins is arguably the most famous video game streamer in the world, having achieved significant mainstream success and recognition. With film roles, television appearances, and more on top of his mega-popular video game streams, it’s no secret that Ninja has made millions in his career so far. But making big money also comes with paying a lot in taxes, and there’s something in particular about taxation that the popular streamer has taken issue with.
In one of his recent Twitch streams, Ninja talked about having to pay about half of his income in taxes. Ninja gave the example of someone who made $50 million in a year, and how about $25 million of that would immediately be gone in taxes. While Ninja said “it blows” for that to happen, some have misrepresented what exactly he said. Ninja isn’t necessarily complaining about the amount he pays in taxes, but that there are billionaires and corporations that get by with paying less than he has to pay.
“Let me tell you what the issue is. I think we have to find the people who are billionaires and the millionaires, and the companies that are illegally not paying taxes or hiding/evading taxes,” Ninja said in his stream. While Ninja may or may not be unhappy with how much he has to pay in taxes, it’s clear that the streamer takes issue with the fact that there are those out there that cheat the system and avoid paying their fair share of taxes.
Regardless of Ninja’s intentions with his comments, it has generated a mixed reaction online. There are those who agree with Ninja’s assessment, but others who are upset that Ninja is a millionaire complaining about taxes. Of course, this is far from the first time that Ninja has said something that has generated a strong reaction from the Internet.
Earlier this year, Ninja generated some controversy when he tweeted about the phrase “it’s just a game.” In his tweet, Ninja stated that people who don’t get angry after losing have lost twice. “There’s always something to learn, and always room for improvement, never settle.” Like his comments about taxes, Ninja’s “it’s just a game” comments generated a wide range of reactions from people online.
In the meantime, anyone interested in watching Ninja’s streams should note that he recently signed an exclusivity deal with Twitch. Ninja’s streaming career was in a bit of a limbo after Microsoft shut down Mixer, with the streamer experimenting with both YouTube and Twitch before finally signing with the latter.
