Pokemon GO is no stranger to annoying bugs, and we’re not talking about the ones players can catch. Only last month, the game’s Dragon Week became mired in drama when some players encountered a bug that made the Timed Research become inaccessible from the main menu. Thankfully, this bug was quickly fixed and Niantic generally seems to keep on top of issues such as this.
The latest bug, however, is quite a bizarre one, though so far it appears to be harmless and doesn’t seem to threaten ruining a player’s progress or anything. Specifically, this bug is creating fake gyms that players have been spotting near their locations.
The first reported sighting comes from a Reddit post. A player, who was waiting to pick up his girlfriend’s daughter at the time, received an invite to a Remote Raid, a feature incorporated earlier in the year that allows players to take part in nearby raids. This way, a player could participate without needing to leave their home.
Though they accepted, nobody else was joining the raid. So, once the timer reached 20 seconds, the player gave up and left. Shortly afterwards, the daughter arrived and they drove home. But upon reaching home, the player noticed that a new gym had appeared near their girlfriend’s house and it was hosting a Mega Raid – the same raid they had attempted to join earlier.
Other players revealed that they had also experienced this bug, with one saying that it happens half the time they receive raid invites. Thankfully, there are so far no claims that the bug is harming peoples’ games and the gyms can’t even be interacted with. Attempting to do so apparently only results in a message appearing saying that the gym is out of range and it’s believed that closing and restarting the Pokemon GO app causes them to disappear.
As for what’s causing this bug in the first place, one Reddit user may have an explanation. According to them, remote raiding creates a fake gym that is then used for said raid. The gym is meant to vanish once the raid ends, but a memory leak sometimes occurs, meaning the game is unable to remove it. Whether this is intentional is unknown, but some theorize that this is deliberate on Niantic’s part so as to prevent performance issues.
In the meantime, players may want to start preparing for the upcoming Mega Raid against Mega Pidgeot and arm themselves with certain Electric types to make the fight easier.
The fourth season of the Battle League has also begun, which will include the all-new Flying Cup later this month, which only allows Flying types.
Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS devices.
