Capcom is elbow-deep in the development of the next installment in of its iconic horror franchise, Resident Evil 8. At the moment, exact details with regards to its story are still a mystery, apart from the fact that it will mostly take place in some village, feature enemies like werewolves and possibly witches, and will feature Ethan Winters and Chris Redfield. Most importantly, its release date is still unknown, but Capcom revealed that the game would launch for the PC and next-gen consoles sometime in 2021.
Apart from Resident Evil 8, fans of the longstanding survival-horror franchise are also anticipating which Resident Evil game Capcom will remake next. Although there is still no official word on that score, reliable leakers claim that it will be Resident Evil 4. If Resident Evil 4 is truly Capcom’s next remake, it has a high chance of becoming one of the studio’s best re-imaginings yet, especially after Capcom’s experience with the remakes of RE 1, 2, and 3. However, apart from Capcom’s extensive experience, Resident Evil 4 remake may also benefit from Resident Evil 8, given its similar setting.
Ever since Capcom revealed Resident Evil 8 at the PS5 event a few months ago, the studio made it clear that the game will take place in a remote village similar to Resident Evil 4. The game’s official title is Resident Evil Village, which goes to show just how important the setting will be in the upcoming game. As previously mentioned, Resident Evil 4 could benefit from Resident Evil 8, given that the latter could serve as the perfect testing ground for the village setting.
It is not a secret that most horror games rely on its setting to help give off a creepy environment for players to explore. The first Resident Evil game has the Spencer Mansion that made players feel watched and claustrophobic. Then there’s the Silent Hill franchise that mostly revolved in the town of Silent Hill and its surrounding areas where hellish nightmares await players. Sure, enemies such as zombies, monsters, ghosts, and other hellish creatures are what usually scares players in a horror game. However, one can’t ignore the important role of the game’s setting in establishing terror and the feeling of uneasiness and dread, which are important elements in any horror game.
Now, if executed right, the village in Resident Evil 8 could just be as important to the scare factor as any of the previously mentioned locations in horror games. Should Resident Evil 8 become as successful as any of its predecessors, then the execution of the village setting would be the perfect testing ground that Capcom could carry over in Resident Evil 4 remake. On the flip side, if Resident Evil 8 proves to be lackluster, then the RE4 remake still stands to benefit, given that Capcom could use fan feedback to identify which elements did not work.
Moreover, fan reception could also help the studio identify what other improvements can be made so that it would not make the same mistake in the rumored remake. Of course, all of this depends on how players will receive Resident Evil 8, which is still hard to predict given how little Capcom has revealed about the game.
Apart from becoming a testing ground to the still unconfirmed Resident Evil 4 remake, fans are also wondering whether the village in RE4 and RE8 is connected in some way. Given that there are still tons of information that players ought to know about the town in Resident Evil 8, it wouldn’t be unlikely if the setting will be connected with RE4. If Capcom is really planning to remake Resident Evil 4, then it would undoubtedly be a good idea to connect the two games, mostly since Resident Evil 7, and, by the looks of it, Resident Evil 8, are somewhat disconnected from the overall lore of the franchise.
Connecting RE8 with the RE4 remake would be the perfect way to tie the newer games with the old ones and would also be a good Easter egg that would probably blow the minds of veteran Resident Evil players. Luckily for fans, it appears that Capcom will be sharing more about Resident Evil 8 in the upcoming Tokyo Games Show later this month. At the moment, it is still unknown whether the company’s plans for its next remake will be mentioned, but, more info about Resident Evil 8 and perhaps a gameplay trailer will be showcased at the upcoming event.
Resident Evil 8 is scheduled to launch in 2021, while Resident Evil 4 Remake is rumored to be in development.
