Fans of the vehicular soccer video game Rocket League have some major changes to look forward to as a date has been announced for when the game will be officially going free-to-play.
Announced by Nintendo on Twitter, the free-to-play change means the game will no longer require a purchase for those who have yet to play Rocket League and are looking to try the mega hit sports title. The change will apply to all platforms Rocket League is available on.
The announcement of the game going free-to-play isn’t the only good news for fans of Rocket League. Earlier this month, Psyonix announced that Nintendo Switch and PlayStation players will not be required to have a subscription to their console’s online service in order to play Rocket League online. The news isn’t surprising as free-to-play games on both consoles haven’t required an online subscription for some time but Xbox One owners are currently out of luck due to Microsoft’s policies on multiplayer games requiring a Gold subscription.
Announced in July, developer Psyonix’s push for free-to-play isn’t the only big change coming to the popular multiplayer game. This fall Rocket League will receive a major update that intends to make the game easier to digest for beginners. Major front menu changes will occur along with more streamlined teaching tools as the developer expects a whole new group of players to try the game once the free-to-play change occurs, possibly breaking the peak player count record set earlier this year.
Rocket League has hit a major stride in 2020. Since the impact of Covid-19 many fans have been stuck at home with nowhere to go making the game a popular go-to for fans to connect with friends they are unable to see. The game’s popularity even caught the attention of the BBC, which resulted in BBC airing Rocket League‘s Esport,The Rocket League Spring Series, on television.
Rocket League‘s success may be the result of Psyonix’s willingness to evolve the game in some significant ways since its release in 2015. The game has undergone some major changes that have impacted the player progress, loot output, and match types, keeping things fresh for the dedicated fan base that is continuously growing. Late last year loot boxes were finally removed from Rocket League after critical response from the fan base. In addition, Rocket League will see some major changes to the career mode with a new update this fall.
Rocket League is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
