Microsoft’s next gen consoles are only a couple of months away from launching with details on the specs, date and price of the consoles only released by the company just over a week ago.
While Microsoft has officially removed the veil on both consoles, more details about the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S are being revealed everyday, including the size of both consoles in comparison to each other, a detail that may surprise fans.
Even before the consoles’ official reveal, rumors hinted that the Series S was the smaller and cheaper edition of Microsoft’s next-gen offerings. While the Series X will run games in 4K, the Series S will run those same games at 1440p. The Series S has had quite a diverse reaction from both fans and developers alike, with some praising the low price tag and others worried about the console holding next-gen games back due to its lower specs.
While Microsoft is already touting the Series S as the company’s smallest console ever made it’s now known that the Series S will weigh a modest 4.25 pounds. The weight of the console is even more impressive when compared to the Series X, which is just shy of being 10 pounds as it is. For what it’s worth, the disc version of the PlayStation 5 is being stated at just over 10 pounds.
The Xbox Series S provides a low barrier of entry for those looking to tiptoe into next-gen. The all-digital console will not only play the same next-gen games that it’s “bigger brother” will play, but also support Xbox Game Pass and xCloud. While the console was shrouded in secrecy for quite some time, it was revealed by the Xbox official Twitter that Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, had a Series S in his bookshelf during his work-from-home appearance at a summer event in July.
Meanwhile, reports from VentureBeat indicate that Microsoft is spending a lot of money on something Xbox related that’s intended to make an impact on the next-gen consoles. While nothing has been specified or confirmed, VentureBeat reported Jeff Grubb has speculated it could be a major 3rd party title launching on Xbox Game Pass. With rumors of Sony grabbing some 3rd party games as timed exclusives, Microsoft could be looking for a good countermove to sway audiences. With both Xbox consoles launching fairly soon, it may not be long until fans find out exactly what that may be.
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch on November 10.
