Arkane Studios’ Deathloop is shaping up to be an action FPS unlike anything else. Though Deathloop was recently delayed to 2021, the game has been making plenty of appearances at recent PlayStation showcase events to highlight it’s unique premise and gameplay.
Now, Arkane Studios gave a more detailed look at how Deathloop’s world and gameplay meld to create a puzzle-like environment. The brand new Deathloop trailer shown at the September PS5 showcase event detailed brand new gameplay, new villains, and showed off a few of Cole’s weapons and abilities in action.
Deathloop’s premise sees the game’s protagonist Cole assassinating eight targets in one day to stop the endless loop he’s found in. Deathloop’s time loop gameplay is the main hook for the game, alongside Cole’s mission to eliminate his targets in a limited amount of time. The most recent Deathloop trailer gives a bit more insight into Cole as a character, as well as the motivations and relationships between a couple of the game’s villains. Specifically, this trailer detailed the villainous scientist Egor Serling as well as the cannibal Aleksis Dorsey, or “The Wolf.”
The title of the trailer is “Two Birds One Stone,” a theme that’s explained further throughout the trailer through Cole’s narration. Though the different assassination targets are spread out across the setting of Blackreef Island players can perform actions and complete tasks that make it easier to eliminate two targets at once. It seems that players can plan out their roots in a single loop to manipulate multiple targets into going to the same place, making it possible to eliminate every target and break the loop.
In Deathloop’s action-packed PS5 trailer, Cole says something fairly interesting when talking about his experience in the loop. Cole mentions attempting to take the targets out one-by-one too many times to remember, but there’s never enough time to accomplish his mission that one. This makes it sound as if it’s either impossible or incredibly difficult to assassinate all eight targets without manipulating them to move closer to one another. This might mean that players will have to get even more creative in their approach to assassinate all eight targets in just one day.
Whether it’s possible or not to assassinate each target one-by-one, the fact remains that Deathloop’s premise is one unlike any other game that deals with assassinating targets. It’s abundantly clear that Arkane Studio’s has dreamed about making Deathloop for quite some time now, as the care and attention to detail is evident throughout these more recent trailers. Hopefully the game’s time loop premise and gameplay is deep enough to hook players in when the game launches sometime in Q2 of 2021.
Deathloop will be available in quarter 2 of 2021 for PC and PlayStation 5.
