Oscar winning actress Halle Berry said in an interview promoting her new film Bruised that she knew Catwoman “wasn’t quite right” while making it.
After becoming the first African American woman ever to win the Best Actress Oscar for Monster’s Ball in 2002, Berry would infamously go on to star in Catwoman, a critical and commercial bomb which failed to make back its $100 million budget. Talking about her decision to take the role, Berry said “people said to me, ‘You can’t do that. You’ve just won the Oscar. Because I didn’t do Jinx, I thought, ‘This is a great chance for a woman of color to be a superhero. Why wouldn’t I try this?'” Berry went on to receive the Razzie award for Worst Actress after starring in the film.
But once attached, Berry had severe misgivings about the film’s plot which had Sharon Stone as the CEO of a cosmetics company whose products cause their users skin to harden like marble or disintegrate if they stop using it. “The story didn’t feel quite right. I remember having that argument, ‘Why can’t Catwoman save the world like Batman and Superman do? Why is she just saving women from a face cream that cracks their face off?’ But I was just the actor for hire. I wasn’t the director. I had very little say over that,” Berry reminisced. Even credited screenwriter John Rogers has slammed the film for having ‘zero cultural relevance’.
Talking about the most disappointing moments of her career, Berry opened up about her own disappointment when the planned James Bond spin off of her character Jinx failed to materialize. Berry said that “it was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”
However Catwoman had one positive effect for Halle Berry’s career in that it inspired her to direct. Her directorial debut, the Netflix movie Bruised, had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept 12 and is set to appear on the streaming platform in the near future.
