Naughty Dog Didn’t Just Emulate Crash Bandicoot in Uncharted 4

It’s been years since Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was released, but fans are still finding new things to love about the game. Developer Naughty Dog is the creator of many well-loved video game series, and fans have been particularly excited to pick out the Easter eggs in each of the studio’s games.

Naughty Dog is the studio behind two excellent PlayStation video game franchises: Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted. The crossover of fan dreams occurred when the two series’ came together in Uncharted 4 as Nathan Drake and Elena sat down to play a round of Crash Bandicoot on the PS1. The game within a game scenario worked perfectly for nostalgic fans who got to replay a classic Crash Bandicoot level while listening to commentary from the Uncharted characters. This was also before the release of the remastered Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, so it was a pretty big deal at the time.

A fun fact for players is that Naughty Dog actually went the extra mile to make the Crash Bandicoot scenario occur in Uncharted, recreating the full level in its own game engine instead of simply emulating the old game. Shesez’ YouTube video series ‘Boundary Break’ explored the Uncharted 4 level, going deep behind the scenes to uncover the hidden workings of the segment.

Going into the intricate level design, it was uncovered that Naughty Dog created 3D modelling of the entire Crash Bandicoot boulder run level, but only worked on elements that players would be able to see. So moving the camera around the level shows unfinished models and rendering, which is logical, seeing as the demo is only an Easter egg and doesn’t require the same level of detail as the actual Uncharted game.

Naughty Dog is known for hiding Easter eggs in its games. Most recently The Last of Us 2 had shout outs to notable Naughty Dog games including Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, and Crash Bandicoot. Uncharted 4 players are also still discovering the studio’s hidden Easter eggs to this day, having recently uncovered a Clicker from The Last of Us in one of the levels. It’s clear that Naughty Dog is very proud of its past work and it’s a fun exercise for fans to discover the clues hidden throughout each of its games.

Naughty Dog has long moved on from its Crash Bandicoot days and the reigns have been handed to Toys For Bob, which will soon be releasing Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, as the first canon sequel to the series since Crash 3: Warped. Naughty Dog, meanwhile, has recently finished work on The Last of Us 2 but it’s unknown whether the series will return to the Uncharted series or move on to a new IP.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is available now on PS4.
