A new Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase will be live-streamed this Thursday, September 17 at 7am PT, featuring more 3rd party games for the Nintendo Switch.
Announced earlier today, the showcase will feature updates and announcements on upcoming 3rd party games for 2020 and beyond. While rumored for some time, Nintendo confirmed the Direct with a bit more lead time then previous directs. Over the past year Nintendo has announced several Directs the night before they would occur, leading fans to scramble to make time to view the showcase.
While the contents of the Direct are currently unknown, separate rumors state that a new Monster Hunter may be announced from Capcom fairly soon for the Nintendo Switch. If true, the new game could be a highlight of tomorrow’s Direct. In addition, Nintendo has yet to reveal the newest addition to the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the second season of characters. While the Direct is third-party focused, the announcement could be a third-party character.
In the previous Partner Direct, held in August, Nintendo featured several partner announcements of upcoming games releasing for the Nintendo Switch. Highlights include Kingdom Hearts: Melody Of Memory, World Of Tanks Blitz, and Collection Of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend, all planned to release this fall. Thus far, Nintendo has held several Partner Directs featuring games that may have originally been planned to be revealed in a larger E3-style direct.
Nintendo’s Direct plans have had quite a change throughout the year due to the impact Covid-19. Like many Publishers and Developers in the industry, Nintendo has had to reschedule and reorganize plans on both the release and reveal of several games. In early September Nintendo celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise featuring several Mario related announcements, another long rumored event that may have been pushed back due to complications.
The 35th anniversary Direct featured several announcements of new games and re-releases including Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. The Direct also featured several cross-game promotions including a special 35th anniversary level for Super Mario Maker 2. It was later found out on Super Mario Maker 2‘s official site that the special level was to originally launch in April, hinting that Nintendo may have originally planned to air the event earlier in the year.
Whatever ends up being announced at the Direct, there’s no doubt that Nintendo has already had an incredible year with the Nintendo Switch continuing to sell despite the significant impact of Covid-19. The first-party output from the company continues to hold the fort with Animal Crossing: New Horizons having record-breaking sales and Super Mario 3D All-Stars already selling out online before the game’s release.
