Fans have been hoping for more Splinter Cell content for years, with Ubisoft constantly giving fans Sam Fisher cameos in their other projects. Fan requests for a new game focused on the goggle-wearing hero may have been heard, as a recent rumor states that new Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed games will be announced today. The only catch is that both projects will be for VR.
These VR projects were rumored to be in development last year, so official info from Ubisoft on the games seems believable. Some Splinter Cell fans likely will not be happy, though, as this will come off as another tease for non-VR owners. While the technology has come a long way and certainly has its supporters, many Splinter Cell players want another traditional stealth game. Still, like Assassin’s Creed, the series could be a great fit for virtual reality.
Sam Fisher’s latest cameo takes place in Rainbow 6 Siege, with the character coming to the game in its latest update. Seeing Sam in so many projects over the years has been bittersweet for fans, as the character’s constant appearances are reminders of what once was. The last mainline Splinter Cell game, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, reviewed very well and was appreciated by fans. The game must not have sold well enough for Ubisoft, however, as it has been over half a decade since Sam got his own AAA game.
Splinter Cell is not the only series set to be revived through Virtual Reality, as Respawn’s Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is releasing next year as a VR exclusive project. Both the Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games will supposedly be exclusive to Oculus, which should be a good indication that the games will be detailed and require a powerful VR setup to run. When the games will release is unclear, though that information could come with their reveal later today if this rumor proves to be true.
As for the Assassin’s Creed VR project, it will be interesting to see when that game is set. The Assassin’s Creed series still has numerous time periods to explore, so Ubisoft can still take AC in plenty of different directions. Assassin’s Creed seems like an even better fit than Splinter Cell for virtual reality, as blending into crowds and tailing targets in such an immersive way could be fun.
Whether this rumor proves to be true is unclear, though those interested in the VR projects will find out very soon if it is. If it proves to be false, Assassin’s Creed fans still have AC Valhalla later this year to look forward to. Splinter Cell fans, on the other hand, would likely have to keep making do with cameos for some time.
The Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games are reportedly in development.
