She-Hulk Series Lands a Director Who Loves Doing Comedies

Marvel Studios’ plans for the fourth phase of its cinematic universe include a She-Hulk series for Disney+. Now, Marry Me director Kat Coiro is in negotiations to join the Marvel family as a director on the upcoming series.

Marvel Studios first announced plans for a series centered on Jennifer Walters, a.k.a She-Hulk, at the 2019 D23 Expo. Co-created by Stan Lee in part to ensure Marvel would own the rights to a female version of the Hulk in case CBS’ The Incredible Hulk series introduced such a character, She-Hulk debuted in the comics as a formidable attorney who transforms into a large, powerful, and green version of herself after a severe injury requires her to receive an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. However, unlike her cousin, Walters retains most of her normal personality even when future issues of the comic made her transformation permanent.

Deadline reports Coiro will direct multiple episodes of She-Hulk and serve as executive producer as well. Cairo’s previous directing credits include episodes of Dead to MeIt’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Modern Family, and Brooklyn 99 and the upcoming romantic comedy feature Marry Me starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Rick and Morty scribe Jessica Gao has already boarded She-Hulk as the lead writer on a team that includes Dana Schwartz, who has confirmed the scripts for the series are already complete.

Marvel’s line-up of Disney+ shows also include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and the animated What If…? seriesMultiple characters who will be introduced in these shows, including She-Hulk, will also appear in future Marvel Studios films. Production on the first three series mentioned was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing Marvel Studios to delay their respective Disney+ premieres.

The Marvel Studios shows for Disney+ are seen by fans a chance to spotlight the lesser-known or supporting characters in the MCU while exploring new genres for the franchise. WandaVision, for example, appears to be taking its cues from classic sitcoms and it appears the She-Hulk series might be aiming for a similar comedic tone considering the creative team being assembled.

Now, the showrunners just need to find an actress to bring She-Hulk to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While nothing official has been announced regarding casting, Community star Alison Brie became a popular choice among fans after rumors claiming Marvel was searching for an ‘Alison Brie type’ to play the titular heroine began circulating.

She-Hulk is currently scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
