Japanese game development studio Toaplan may not be as much of a household name as companies like Nintendo, but anyone keyed into Internet culture will no doubt be familiar with its 1989 scrolling-shooter Zero Wing for spawning the iconic “all your base are belong to us” meme. That game, alongside similar shooters Truxton, Hellfire, and Fire Shark, are being given physical re-releases for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive thanks to Retro-Bit Gaming.
Each of the four shooters has its own $44.99 Collector’s Edition set with goodies like slipcovers, stickers, and in the case of Zero Wing an art card featuring antagonist Cats saying his iconic line. There are also special interviews with Masahiro Yuge, a developer for Toaplan before the studio closed due to bankruptcy in 1994, and all four collections can be purchased in one huge bundle for $159.99.
Pre-orders for the Toaplan collections are available through October 6, 2020 via retailers like Strictly Limited in Europe and Limited Run Games in America, the latter of which is offering pre-orders for vinyl records based on the Hellfire, Truxton, and Zero Wing soundtracks for $27.99 each. Limited Run Games is also offering pre-orders for Game Boy re-releases of Shantae, the WayForward platformer, as of this writing.
Fans of Toaplan’s work should no doubt be excited about these sets, which may offer interesting insight into a bygone era of consoles thanks to elements like developer interviews. The console war between Sega and Nintendo during the Genesis era is also a focus in the upcoming CBS All Access documentary based on the book Console Wars by Blake Harris.
Pre-orders for Zero Wing and other Toaplan re-releases on Sega Genesis are available through October 6.
