Instead of just releasing one next-generation console, this time around, Microsoft will have two next-gen machines available for consumers. One is the Xbox Series X, an ultra-powerful machine that claims to be the most powerful video game console on the market. The other is the Xbox Series S, which is considerably weaker than its Xbox Series X counterpart, but also comes with a much lower price tag. And as it so happens, the Xbox Series S, not the Series X, could be Microsoft’s ticket to making a big comeback next generation.
Historically speaking, the most-powerful video game console has almost never won any given generation in terms of total overall sales. The PS2 was far weaker, technically speaking, than its Xbox counterpart, yet it is the best-selling game console of all time. Conversely, the PlayStation 3 was the most powerful console of its generation, only for it to be outsold by the Xbox 360 for most of its lifespan, and absolutely dominated in sales by the Nintendo Wii. The Wii, as some may recall, was practically a generation behind its competition in terms of graphics, yet was still the best-selling console of its time.
But one big advantage the Wii had over its competition was its price. At the time, consumers had to choose between a $600 PS3 or a $250 Wii. That combined with the novelty of the Wii’s motion controls made it an unstoppable force in the gaming industry, propelling it to become the best-selling system of the generation despite being markedly weaker than the other consoles on the market.
The Xbox Series S finds itself in a similar situation. At $299, the Xbox Series S is the cheapest next-generation console available, coming in at $100 less than the PS4 Digital Edition and $200 less than the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X. And while it doesn’t have a novelty like the Wii did, it is still capable of playing next-gen exclusive games, and it can play games at a blistering 120 frames per second. The only other way gamers can get these kinds of next-gen experiences is by shelling out $100-$200 more on the more powerful consoles.
At a time when many are facing financial strife due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Xbox Series S low price point could very well catch the eye of consumers who would usually go for the more expensive consoles. After all, it is genuinely a low-cost way to get into next-gen gaming, and even those who can’t afford the $299 upfront can use the Xbox All Access plan to pay for the Series S in smaller monthly payments instead.
All of this combined with the Xbox Series S’ access to Xbox Game Pass could make it the console to watch in the next generation.
