With just over a week left until the Worlds 2020 Championship begins, League of Legends players all over the world are getting ready to watch their favorite teams compete for glory. While there is usually a fair bit of hype, this year is especially interesting thanks to the return of virtual K-pop group K/DA and preparations for future champion Seraphine. Now, after a few days of teasing, Riot Games has released the official theme song of Worlds 2020.
The 2014 World Championship in Season 4 was the first time a song was featured with Imagine Dragons’ “Warriors.” This tradition has continued with songs like “Legends Never Die,” “RISE,” and “Phoenix” over the past few years, each accompanied by music videos showing the journeys of famous pros and their champions. The newest song to join this group is “Take Over,” featuring artists Jeremy McKinnon, MAX, and Henry.
In the associated video, a young player ends up encountering Faker, who then coaches him to become better despite setbacks and defeats. Eventually, the player make his way to the championships, where the last opponent is his friend who briefly appeared at the start. During this story, the repeated chorus “We’re Taking Over” drives home the point that League of Legends‘ future lies with the community who will carry on even after the current generation of pros retire.
Furthermore, each fight scene is against a famous player such as Xpeke’s Kassadin, Mata’s Thresh, and Tian’s Lee Sin, who helped carry FunPlus Phoenix to victory in 2019. These references, along with Faker watching his disciple on stream, embody the torch being passed over to LoL players in the present and future.
League of Legends is available on PC.
