Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Coming to Nintendo Swtich Next Year

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin has been announced at the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase. The small digital event showcases what the partners of Nintendo have been working on, as well as upcoming releases. Fans of the Monster Hunter series were treated to trailers for two games that will arrive on the Nintendo Switch. While fans still have a while to wait for a Monster Hunter Stories 2, there seems to be plenty for Switch players to look forward to.

The most recent Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter World received critical acclaim and many fans expected the title to be ported to the Switch. Instead, there will be two new games for the platform and Monster Hunter Stories 2 looks to differentiate itself from the majority of the series. The original Monster Hunter Stories was designed with portable consoles in mind, but the next iteration of the spin-off series looks to build on the first installment and add plenty of narrative weight.

The game will utilize cel-shading which gives it a vastly different appearance to the mainline series. However, fans of games like Ni No Kuni may appreciate the artistic similarities and many enjoy a more animated look in games. The story focuses on the disappearing Rathalo and emerging danger. Narratively it looks set to be a classic action-adventure, but fans will expect plenty of RPG elements to be included because of the conventions of the Monster Hunter games. The trailer for the game featured as the second video in the Nintendo Direct Mini showcase.

Alongside Monster Hunter Rise, it looks like 2021 will be a significant year for the franchise on the Switch. The games will be staggered in terms of release with Rise arriving in March 2021, and Stories 2 in September of the same year. Nonetheless, given the replayability of the games and the hours that some players put into the titles, this may mean that fans dedicate a lot of time to the series this year. With that said, the presentation was forwarded with a message that stressed dates may be changed so these release windows are not set in stone.

Rumors had suggested a Switch version of Monster Hunter would be announced in the coming months and many fans will be glad that they have clarity on how the series can be played on the console. Monster Hunter Stories 2 looks set to provide some variety in the series and with that in mind, it will be interesting to see what the fan base makes of this spin-off.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is scheduled to release September, 2021.
