PS5 Will Be Backward Compatible With 99% of PS4 Games at Launch

Whenever people go to buy a new next-gen console, there are a lot of factors they need to keep in mind. They might want to know what the controller looks like for the Xbox Series S/X, or what games will be available at launch for the PS5. Many people also want to know if they can play many of the same games they purchased for a previous generation on a new console, and for potential PS5 buyers, the answer is pretty heartening.

Today was a huge day for PS5 fans, and the price and release date for Sony’s console was finally revealed, along with a ton of games that people will be able to play on the PS5, as well as controller and accessory prices. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan revealed some more info to The Washington Post that fans may be interested in hearing, including a claim that Sony has tested thousands of PS4 games on the PS5 for backward compatibility and found that 99% are compatible.

Sony has previously stated that the majority of PS4 games will be compatible with the PS5, and that more backward compatibility may come later, but would take time. The fact that the CEO/President of the entire company is saying almost all PS4 games will be playable at launch is even better than a “majority,” because incompatible games will probably be few and far between. Players will most likely be hard-pressed to find a PS4 title they own that isn’t immediately playable on the PS5.

Some people may remember Ubisoft’s claim that the PS5 is not backward compatible with earlier PlayStations, and that statement has since been removed from the company’s website, giving hope to those who might want to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games on the PS5.

Some people claim that backward compatibility is a bare minimum people should expect of console production, especially when the next-gen console uses the same disc format as the gen before it, making the technical achievement pretty attainable. If this feature isn’t present on most consoles, it drastically harms game preservation and makes it just plain inconvenient for players to switch between consoles for different games, especially if their older consoles starts to decay in ability.

There are no guarantees, but people can safely assume the vast majority of PS4 games at least will be playable on the PS5. Hopefully generations after this one will continue to make the same effort to preserve games.

The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12th, 2020.
