AAPE x League of Legends Collaboration Official, Apparel Collection Revealed

AAPE, the sub-label of Japanese fashion brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE), will collaborate with League of Legends to release an apparel collection that will coincide with the upcoming 2020 League of Legends World Championship later this month. The unisex apparel collection features an outerwear jacket, several t-shirts, a hoodie, a pair of cargo pants, a pair of sneakers, a belt bag, and a baseball cap. The collaboration also includes an in-game True Damage Yasuo Prestige Edition skin that will be able to be obtained by redeeming Prestige Points. The skin was leaked last month via the Public Beta Environment.

The collection is inspired by the aesthetics of Prestige Edition skins, characterized by their gold base tone, and the modern street elements present in the True Damage series of skins where several League of Legends champions form a virtual hip hop collective. On September 25, AAPE will release the collection online and in select stores globally: the United States, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Japan. The True Damage Yasuo Prestige Edition skin will also be available in-game on the same date.

Riot Games’ collaboration with AAPE follows last year’s own with French fashion house Louis Vuitton. While the Louis Vuitton collab was made to celebrate the 2019 League of Legends World Championship held in Europe, the AAPE collection will mark the 2020 League of Legends World Championship that will take place in Shanghai, China from next week onwards and into October. It is interesting to see that AAPE was chosen as Riot Games’ partner as opposed to the mainline brand of BAPE. AAPE is generally distinguished as the more casual sister brand of BAPE which may reflect the target demographic being the younger gaming audience in Asia.

This partnership is not the only one Riot Games has for the 2020 World Championship; Nike has announced a footwear and apparel collection based on the four teams from China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL) that will represent the region. The collection, which includes an Air Jordan 1 colorway, aligns with Nike’s role as the official shoe and clothing provider for the league.

It appears that Riot Games is going all out to ensure that the World Championship will be a momentous event despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 World Championship was originally planned to be held in several Chinese cities, but will now be held in a bubble system in Shanghai to ensure the health and safety of all those involved. Though players and team staff will be in China, casting will occur remotely in Riot’s studios in Los Angeles, Berlin and Seoul. These circumstances have also affected teams, with the two representatives from the Vietnam Championship Series not being able to attend due to travel restrictions enacted by the Vietnamese government and PSG Talon from the Pacific Championship Series having to start the tournament with substitute players after their starters encountered visa problems.

League of Legends is available on PC.
