Destiny 2 Finally Making Important Change to Ghosts in Beyond Light

Bungie has provided a number of important news in relation to Destiny 2: Beyond Light in the past couple of weeks. Today, the studio revealed how Ghosts will be evolving this November, much like armor did back in Shadowkeep.

This piece of news comes from the latest This Week at Bungie article and goes into quite a bit of depth. For some time now, fans have been asking for Ghost customization in Destiny 2 to separate functionality from visuals and allow more flexibility. Bungie has agreed that Ghosts needed some love and an overhaul.

Beyond Light‘s “Ghost 2.0” update aims to further the build-crafting ambition of Destiny. In essence, Ghosts will be blank slates moving forward, letting fans choose shells based on appearance without worrying about perks. Every single Ghost Shell will have access to the same customization options, regardless of source or rarity (except for the Generalist Shell which is the uncommon rarity Ghost given to new players). The novelty Kill Tracker and Leviathan Boss Kill displays will continue to remain on their respective Ghost shells after the update.

After November 10, Ghosts will have 10 energy levels and four mod slots. Each Ghost will have an Experience mod slot, a Tracking mod slot, an Economic mod slot, and an Activity mod slot, the last one being unlocked only after Masterworking the Ghost shell. Each slot will accept only its type of mod (i.e. an Experience Ghost Mod is only available in the Experience mod slot).

Bungie is going to give a default selection of mods to all players, which will include most of the current Ghost perks, only in mod form. Destination material and chest trackers have been converted to a single universal tracker that shows materials and caches on the HUD regardless of destination. This new mod will have to be acquired from vendor engrams.

There will be plethora of never-before-seen mods too, all of which will be acquired solely from gameplay. The Collections tab will cite the source of all mods to help Guardians that are on the lookout for a specific Ghost build. Players will be able to recreate fan-favorite exotic perk combinations in the new system as well, such as Guiding Light + Treasure Hunter, alongside brand new combinations, of course.

The new Ghost mods showcased are Blinding Light and Greater Core Harvest (Vanguard). Both of these are annual mods, meaning that they will expire a year after they first became available. The former gives a 12% boost to XP gains, up from the current maximum buff of 10% granted by Guiding Light. The latter gives a chance to loot an Enhancement Prism from playlist or Nightfall Strike bosses.

This is a creative way to boost Enchantment Prism acquisition rates, instead of just increasing its drop chance from Nightfall: The Ordeal completions, while also making playlist Strikes more endearing. A buff to upgrade materials was one of the highly requested updates from the dedicated player base, so this is welcome news. Last and certainly least, players can take a sneak peek at how the new dark UI background will look like inside an inspection screen.

All of this information coupled with the screenshots indicate that there will be a large number of new mods to hunt. This is best of both worlds situation because when “Armor 2.0” launched, it didn’t provide players the mod versions of perks they’ve already acquired, asking them to rediscover perks they already had access to. Plus, there weren’t many new armor mods outside seasonal ones. But, the new Ghost system seems to be acknowledging player progress while also providing new resources for those who want a more modern build.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available on November 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. A PS5 version is also in development.
