While most movie studios continue to push back on highly anticipated premieres until theaters are ready to fully reopen -especially in America-, Disney stepped out of the norm by deciding to release Mulan on Disney+ Premiere Access, and it now looks like that gamble is paying off handsomely.
As Yahoo Finance reported, drawing from numbers provided by data analysis firm 7Data, around 29% of Disney+ U.S. subscribers had forked over the $29.99 charge up until September 12. That, coupled with an estimated user base of 30 million Disney+ accounts in the U.S., points to almost 9 million subscribers opting to buy Mulan before it becomes available for free come December.
To get the math out of the way, this totals up to no less than $261 million only accounting for the United States “box office”, that will surely appease the company after a disappointing release that saw Mulan severely underperform in the Chinese market.
Added up with its worldwide release, Mulan is coming close to hitting the $300 million mark on a very similar budget to Tenet, its main competitor, which has failed to rally crowds to American theaters, something Disney decided against altogether, which in hindsight was the proper move.
That isn’t the end of the good news for Disney, whose Disney+ app also saw a 68% increase in downloads on the weekend Mulan made its debut. All things considered, Mulan’s mixed reception by critics and audiences has not affected the business side of things, and that’s before taking into account that, unlike movie tickets, Disney gets to keep 100% of the profits it makes from streaming the film.
Under this scenario, if Black Widow is deemed to be a financial risk for theatrical release in North America, Disney could easily be tempted to forgo it completely, take the streaming route again and start setting a new distribution scheme currently out of its competitors’ grasp. After all, if even a controversy laden Mulan can pull in such big numbers on streaming alone, what can Disney expect out of a MCU film starring Scarlett Johansson as the first female solo Avenger?
Mulan will be available with no extra charge on Disney+ starting December 4.
