Marvel Announces Release Date for Marvel 616 Docuseries

Having teased the project for some time now, Marvel has finally seen fit to announce a release date for their upcoming Disney+ show Marvel 616. An anthology documentary, the series will explore the history and creation of different Marvel Comics characters and stories, and delve into the history of the people who wrote them. If that sounds like a good time, then interested fans can look forward to seeing the entire thing on November 20 of this year.

Earlier this year, Marvel had released two teasers for the show. One came from the episode “Higher, Further, Faster,” which showcased a series of interviews with trailblazing women in Marvel Comics. The other, from “Lost and Found,” was a peek at all the unusual and forgotten characters of the Marvel Universe, discussing weird oddballs like The Whizzer and also how Black Panther went from a neglected hero to a reinvented icon.

Marvel 616 is, as many fans will know, a reference to the Marvel Multiverse. Marvel Comics uses the multiverse concept to create alternate versions of the timeline where all sorts of different ideas can be explored. Earth-616 is the official designation of the main timeline for the comic books, while other universes exist with significant differences to established heroes and settings. For example, Earth-1610, also known as the “Ultimate” universe, featured darker, edgier versions of Marvel heroes, and eventually introduced Miles Morales as Spider-Man, who was so popular he eventually got transplanted into the main comic’s timeline.

Those interested in how Marvel plans to be more diverse and inclusive going forward should definitely plan on making time for Marvel 616. “Higher, Further, Faster,” in particular, includes an extended discussion with some of the minds behind Kamala Kahn, one of Marvel’s more successful new heroes. The episode, directed by Gillian Jacobs, sits down with current Marvel VP Sana Amanat as she discusses how her own background as a Muslim-American influenced the character. All these stories and more will be unveiled in further detail when the docuseries finally makes its way to streaming in November.

Marvel 616 will be available on Disney+ starting November 20.
