When No Man’s Sky was being shown off back in 2016, it promised an enormous journey. While that journey initially led to disappointment and No Man’s Sky memes, the game has improved since then. Its journey is not over, and is now continuing with a new update.
Prior to its release, many features were promised in No Man’s Sky, and while only some of those materialized upon release, many of them exist in the game now. A plethora of updates have not only updated the game’s visual clarity, but added new features in droves. From surface exploration craft to both active and passive multiplayer features, there’s a lot going on in No Man’s Sky these days. Its newest update promises to continue that tradition.
While it made lists as one of the most disappointing games of 2016, No Man’s Sky set about trying to reverse that stigma quickly. Its first update, Foundations, was intended not to overhaul the game completely, but to serve as a stepping stone for the future. According to a recent blogpost, the game’s next update, titled Origins, is meant to serve the same function. Origins is supposed to be “the beginning of something new, as No Man’s Sky continues to grow and evolve.”
The post discussing the update comes as a bit of a surprise, especially since it declares that Origins is dropping next week. This might be exciting if players knew what to expect, but nothing is said about what Origins actually does. There has been a lot added to the game, and not all of it has been catching up to expectations. This means that updates can have very unexpected new features or overhauls. While there are handy tips and tricks for new No Man’s Sky players, veterans would probably like to know what’s coming to prepare accordingly.
Still, if Origins really does release next week, then its contents won’t be a question for long. At this point, very few things could be a surprise if it was added to the game, as previous additions added science fiction staples like teleporters and giant mechs, but there have been stranger things too. The living ships come to mind, which are organic space ships.
There have also been distinctly themed additions, although not as many. The Deep expanded on the underwater gameplay, and Desolation was specifically horror-themed. What Origins will bring, players can only speculate, though it may have to do with the origins of the game’s various species.
No Man’s Sky is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
