Many Mario fans are able to play Super Mario 64 on their Nintendo Switch systems with the recent release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars. While some may easily remember how to get all 120 Power Stars in the game, many are experiencing this game for the first time with this rerelease.
The first mission in Jolly Roger Bay in Super Mario 64 is Plunder in the Sunken Ship. This will have players diving deep underwater in order to find a Power Star among other sunken treasures.
Thanks to the sheer amount of space and possible pathways in Jolly Roger Bay, some players may be unsure about what to do upon arrival. However, the first level goal is easy to accomplish once players realize what to do.
Once players arrive in Jolly Roger Bay, they will need to go straight ahead and jump into the water.
While Mario can swim on top of the water for as long as players want, he will have an air meter if Mario is swimming underwater. It will slowly go down the longer Mario is underwater without air. If players run out of oxygen, Mario will drown and lose a life. Thankfully, coins will restore Mario’s oxygen like with his health, so players should grab them if they are diving underwater. Bubbles will also restore oxygen.
As players get further from the shore, they will need to dive down into the water and look for a large sunken ship. An eel, known as Unagi the eel, will be guarding it from the inside. Players will need to use Mario’s body to lure Unagi out of the boat. Once he has left, players will need to enter the hole that Unagi was inside to enter the ship’s interior.
Once players are inside the ship, there will be four treasure chests that players can open. Players will need to open them in the correct order with sound effects signifying if they are correct. When a chest is opened, it will release a bubble that restores oxygen.
After all the chests are opened, the water inside the ship will drain and players will be able to jump up the platforms inside the ship in order to hit the yellow block at the top. The Power Star for the mission will be inside and the mission will be complete.
In future missions in Jolly Roger Bay, the ship will be no longer underwater with it floating at the water’s surface.
Super Mario 64 is now available as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
