In the recent DC Fandome panel for Superman & Lois, executive producer Todd Helbing confirmed that the upcoming The CW series will be set in the iconic town of Smallville.
Speaking with DC’s publisher and creative director Jim Lee, Helbing said that he wanted a more grounded version of Superman for this show. And one of the biggest differences to previous shows based on the character is that this time around, Clark and Lois are married.
Explaining his decision for setting it in the Kent’s hometown rather than Metropolis, Helbing said “obviously, there was the Smallville series. But I came from a small town in the Midwest, and the town that I grew up in had a business leave that sort of affected everybody in the town, and the town started to dry up. It felt very current with recent years after 2008.”
Having two sons of his own, Helbing also spoke about bringing his own personal experience into the upcoming series that also sees Clark and Lois raising two sons saying “we wanted to tell a story where you have the parents, after this tragic event happens, move back to Smallville and really find that it’s easier, maybe, to raise kids in a place where life isn’t so hectic, as it is in Metropolis.”
The CW show will see Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprise their roles from Supergirl as they move back to Smallville following Clark losing his job at The Daily Planet and the death of his adoptive father.
Planned as a more domestic show than The CW’s roster of DC shows, Superman & Lois will see DC’s power couple raising two teenage sons, Jordan and Jonathan Kent who may not have inherited their father’s powers.
Superman & Lois is set to air on The CW in Jan 2021.
