From The Lion King to Animal Crossing and beyond, cats have played a crucial role in pop culture media. These lovable furballs are some of mankind’s favorite beasts, preying on wild animals but also cuddling with people at night. Humanity used to literally worship these fuzzy creatures, and we still do in some respects.
Whenever a cat appears in-game, players can’t help but want to pet it— and developers often make sure to allow us that option. Games have even gone as far as to allow players to unleash their inner feline, by creating games that center around cats as playable characters. With so many cats throughout video game history, it’s time to look at the absolute best of the feline bunch.
10 Rover (Animal Crossing Series)
Rover has been in Animal Crossing for years, sometimes even appearing as the greeter for the player when they first start up the game. He typically asks for the date and time and helps the player set up their town, among other important functions. So many towns would go unrealized without this furball leading welcoming the player in.
Rover has also made an appearance in the newest game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, playing a major role in the May Day event.
9 Red XIII (Final Fantasy VII)
There is some debate as to exactly what type of animal Red XIII truly is, but he is referred to as a feline on multiple occasions so we’re including him. Anyone who has played a game in the Final Fantasy VII family of titles knows that Red plays an important role that universe, including helping to rescue Aerith from Shinra.
In the original game, he was a unique and powerful playable character who accompanied Cloud and the others on the journey, but in the remake, he has taken on more of a side role— so far, anyway.
8 King Tom (Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch)
King Tom does little to overcome one of the main stereotypes that cats have been plagued with over the years, as he does almost nothing but lie around and clean himself. He does have a great redemption story though, with him eventually becoming purr-cisely the king that his kingdom needs. He also helps players out by giving them important spells over the course of this gorgeous Studio Ghibli-animated RPG.
7 Mae (Night In The Woods)
Night in the Woods is a great game that deals with issues related to mental illness, as dealt with by cat protagonist Mae. She has returned home after dropping out of college, only to discover that there is something different about her hometown and its residents— at least through her eyes.
Tons of characters are present in Night in the Woods that make the game charming, but Mae outshines them all with her unique and cynical perspective, well-suited to a cat-based character.
6 Palicoes (Monster Hunter: World)
Monster Hunter: World brought Palicoes, the feline characters of the Monster Hunter universe, to life in a new way. Instead of just creating your hunter, you got to design your Palico sidekick as well. You also get to adorn them in all the best outfits to make them look as fierce and/or as cute as you want them to.
Palicoes provide necessary help when out on the hunt. They can distract monsters for you, heal you, and attack the beasts head-on. For being so small, they sure are some of the best sidekicks one could ever hope for.
5 Alvina (Dark Souls)
The frightening-looking— but still lovable— Alvina is a cat of few words who invites players to her covenant in Dark Souls. If you select the right answer both times when talking to her, she will invite you to join the Forest Hunters. This covenant protects Artorias’ grave along with Sif. As part of the covenant, you get summoned from your world to hunt down invaders of the forest. Alvina will also reward you for your efforts by giving you the Ring of Fog.
4 Meowth (Pokémon Franchise)
Meowth has always been a staple in the Pokémon series, notable for being one of the few Pokémon that can actually fully speak. He was styled after a Maneki-Neko, a Japanese cat figurine that is said to bring good luck to its owner. This surprisingly seems to work in the opposite direction for Team Rocket since they typically have nothing in the way of good luck in their misadventures. Still, Meowth is great comic relief and one of the best characters in a franchises with literally thousands of them.
3 Cait Sith (Final Fantasy Franchise)
Cait Sith is a catlike animal that has appeared throughout the Final Fantasy games, sometimes as an enemy, other times an ally— and sometimes a bit of both at the same time. The most prominent appearance was in Final Fantasy VII where he was a playable character who rode atop a Moogle.
Full disclosure: Cait Sith in Final Fantasy VII is a disguised robot. Still, Cait Sith are actually felines in the Final Fantasy universe, and FFVII‘s Cait Sith is one of the most endearing characters in the classic game, disguise or not.
2 Blinx (Blinx: The Time Sweeper)
Blinx first appeared on the original Xbox where he found his way into the hearts of a fandom that was most known for their love of grittier games like Halo and Ninja Gaiden. He had a simple mission— prevent the end of Dimension B1Q64 and defeat the Tom-Tom Gang, armed with a vacuum cleaner as his primary weapon. Rather than using it to tidy up, Blinx’s vacuum could actually change the flow of time, leading to some unique gameplay mechanics.
1 Kabegami (Okami)
Okami is a game that focuses on a wolf named Amaterasu, but Kabegami plays an import role. First of all, Kabegami is a literal cat god, which kind of puts her at the top of the feline character hierarchy by default. Not only that, Kabegami helps you out by teaching you the Celestial Brush Technique that allows Amaterasu to scale walls. Kabegami also loves to use Issun as a toy, which is a great bonus for players who hated him.
