God of War‘s sequel on the PS5 was given a teasing announcement at the recent PS5 event, and fans of the previous game will know that Ragnarok will play a big part, as set up in the first game and confirmed in this teaser. Ragnarok means the destruction of the Nine Realms of Norse mythology and the death of the Norse gods, with the twist in the game’s universe that Kratos and his son Atreus, now known to be Loki, are placed at the center of events.
God of War: Ragnarok, or whatever it is officially titled, will likely see Kratos forced to take up the Blades of Chaos once again as the new world in which he’s built his life falls apart around him. However, there’s also one detail that many fans may have missedwhen playing through the first game.
God of War: Ragnarok will very likely be a game about prophecies. Ragnarok begins in both Norse mythology and God of War with the death of Baldur, one of the sons of Odin and Freya, and the Aesir God of Light. Mimir is the God of Wisdom and one of the main characters of the last game, mostly as a talking decapitated head. Moreover, Mimir directly states that Fimbulwinter will last 3 years then Ragnarok will take place. The first God of War released in 2018, and now the sequel is dropping in 2021 — exactly three years. Fimbulwinter begins when Baldur dies in God of War, the big climax of the first game, and it seems unlikely this was a coincedence.
The secret ending of the 2018 God of War involved Atreus having a vision of Thor arriving to confront Kratos and Atreus at the end of Fimbulwinter, so the fact that the new game is in development will not have come as a surprise to many fans. However, fans who noted that Fimbulwinter is a winter prophesied to be 3 years in length might have already been able to guess that the new game would be set for release in 2021, although so many fans seemed to have missed this detail.
Not only that, but there were other huge hints that Ragnarok was on the way. Cory Barlog, creative director at SIE Santa Monica Studio, had a series of Tweets, the main thread of which was pinned to his Twitter account profile. The tweets give insight into the development of the last God of War game, but eagle-eyed observers will have noticed that the first letter of every tweet spelled out “Ragnarok is coming,” which appears at the end of the God of War: Ragnarok trailer released this week.
All of this is good news for God of War fans, as though it means they will have to wait another year for the sequel’s story to be told, it also means that the studio was creating the first game with the second game’s story in mind even before Sony had confirmed that there would be a sequel. This likely means fans have some very satisfying moments in store in the upcoming game, but at the same time, some may feel a bit oblivious for not making the time of development connection.
God of War takes prophecy very seriously, and with Kratos wielding the Blades of Chaos again, fans can expect fate to have a big role in the next game. It was left ambiguous in the last game as to whether Kratos himself would die at the end of Ragnarok, but as fans uncover more and more hints that point towards the next game, it is likely that fans of God of War will be able to replay the first game and uncover plenty of hidden details that point to some of the things that will happen in Ragnarok years in advance.
A new God of War will launch in 2021 for PS5.
