A new character is making their way to Mortal Kombat 11, and Ed Boon is making fans work to find out who they might be.
Boon, the Creative Director on Mortal Kombat 11 at NetherRealm Studios, began teasing a new character yesterday with a tweet featuring the famous Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody.” There was no clear answer on who it could be, and the tease was so obscure that Boon added a second message calling for fans to focus on the specific lyrics: “Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.” Still, fans struggled to draw a conclusion.
Today, Boon released a second hint, this time with a trailer for the Wes Craven film A Nightmare On Elm Street. Boon had to clarify that he was not talking about the movies star, Freddy Krueger, who has already been featured in a Mortal Kombat game.
Fans have been trying to pinpoint who Ed Boon might be teasing. The two most prevalent theories are classic Mortal Kombat character Ermac, or the long-rumored star of the Evil Dead films, Ash Williams.
The argument for Mortal Kombat 3 character Ermac relates to the floating victim featured in the trailer for A Nightmare On Elm Street. Fans have suggested that one will see Ermac’s enemies float, as related to his powers, when they “look up to the sky and see.” Ermac has been a desired character since the release of Mortal Kombat 11, since he has been in many prior MK games.
The other possibility is Ash from The Evil Dead movies, directed by Sam Raimi. The reasoning from these two teases is that a character in A Nightmare on Elm Street is seen watching The Evil Dead, but the connection to the Queen song is more tenuous. Some feel it may related to an iconic poster for The Evil Dead that features a woman looking up to the sky while trying to escape a zombies’ grasp.
The main argument for Ash being the DLC character is that he has already been rumored, leaked, teased and denied multiple times over the past year. It started last year with a chainsaw sound at the end of a MK11 trailer and continued with supposed leaks, including his name being listed on materials for the game, and a denial from actor Bruce Campbell. The back-and-forth suggests either technical issues with the character, or licensing issues concerning his use in the game.
While many may be interested in Ermac returning, Ash is also a good fit following other R-rated film characters coming as fighters throughout the series, including the Terminator, Freddy, Jason, a Xenomorph, and the Predator. Hopefully, the answer becomes clearer as Boon continues to release more teases.
Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
