A game with as many moving parts as a typical battle royale is bound to have a few things slip through the cracks, especially with their constant stream of new content. That’s why many Apex Legends players are only just starting to realize just how powerful Octane might be when it comes to landing finishing blows on downed opponents.
As in most battle royales, depleting an enemy’s health in Apex Legends is only part of eliminating them. Given the ways they can be revived at that point, a downed opponent can become a liability if not taken out right away. Most of the time, players can simply finish them off with a few shots or melee attacks, but those options become less viable when players are too low on ammo or too exposed.
Players have been looking for more efficient ways to take out other players, utilizing techniques like turning Wraith’s portal into a deathtrap, but few have shown promise in regards to quickly disposing of downed enemies. However, Octane may have a way.
Fittingly, the speed-focused Legend can deal with downed players in a single hit utilizing his jump pad. While a deployable sci-fi springboard hardly sounds like Apex’s most powerful ultimate, a gameplay clip shared by MC4Veteran on Reddit this weekend shows otherwise as they toss it at a freshly-downed opponent, who immediately dies upon impact.
As powerful as that looks, players shouldn’t get too excited. Granted, there have been scattered reports of players being able to take out opponents with Octane’s jump pad since last year, and a few of the players commenting on MC4Veteran’s post shared their own experience with being able to damage other players that way. That being said, it’s also possible that what actually killed the downed player was the rest of their team dying the moment the jump pad hit them.
It’s not unusual for moments of weirdly perfect timing to take place in games like this. Take, for instance, the Call of Duty player who recently gave birth to a teammate in a bizarre clip. There could be several explanations behind what happened in the clip, so until more players are able to test it out for themselves and share the results, it remains to be seen if Octane’s jump pad is truly a viable instant-kill option.
Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version coming this fall.
