One of the most important parts of a samurai’s game is their armor. It dictates how they fight and what kind of damage they can take. This is especially true in Ghost of Tsushima where most pieces are specialized to a specific playstyle. Of all the choices players get to make in the game, armor is the one that will affect the experience the most.
From ranged fighters to stealth combatants, there are options for everyone. Even for the niche ronin among the bunch, certain protection stands tall among the rest. Whether it be for defense or a boost in attack damage, these armor sets represent the best Tsushima has to offer. While there are the lackluster few, with armor that won’t do a lot to protect, boost, or increase the aesthetics of the player’s samurai, be sure to know the difference.
10 Gosaku (Best)
For those players that enjoy getting into the thick of battle, the Gosaku armor is one of the most durable in the game. It will both protect the player from incoming attacks with its high health and give Jin an advantage in staggering. While it’s not the finishing move everyone likes to focus on, staggering is a key element to taking enemies down.
Chipping away at their defenses becomes a lot easier when the players staggering abilities increase, leaving enemies wide open for big damage move. Not only making the staggering more important but increasing the damage done with the maneuver is a big advantage, especially when multiple enemies are involved.
9 Samurai Clan (Worst)
A tank armor that provides some of the best defense in the game, Samurai Clan armor serves as a protective shield against all damage. While this might seem like a blessing to the slackers among the group, it will also hide some key battle flaws that the player might have. With little consequence to poor fighting, Jin is doomed to mediocre swordsmanship.
There’s also a fine line between great armor and taking away the fun of the game. After all, failing is part of the challenge and how the player grows as a warrior. Offering no increase in damage dealing, the player is essentially a durable punching bag with a ton of health.
8 Ghost (Best)
One of the most popular armors in the game and for good reason, the ghost armor will give Jin the element of surprise in most situations. Not only one of the best-looking armors but also most useful, giving the stealthier players a stylish option to fight in. It will both reduce the stealth detection time and the number of kills to get in Ghost Stance.
Another feature that works out well in a group situation is the ability to terrify other enemies, making them hesitant when Jin puts down an opponent. This alleviates some of the pressure of group battles considering it’s a little light in the defensive department.
7 Fundoshi (Worst)
The true test of any warrior wanting to call themselves the best, Fundoshi is the most vulnerable a player can be. Sporting only a loincloth that can be attained by visiting all 18 hot springs on the map, Jin will have to keep his feet moving to avoid any heavy damage.
Even when the player is wearing next to nothing it provides more benefits than the Broken Armour, allowing the player to run freely around the environment without making a sound. Designed for the most daring of stealth players, Fundoshi lets the player run past enemies without being detected, even avoiding a fight altogether.
6 Tadayori (Best)
The range fighters armor, for those that prefer the bow it’s a must-have. Increasing the reload speed by 30% allows players more rapid-fire and potential for long-range damage. It also saves the player all the hassle of having to engage in full-on combat if they have good enough aim. Even raising the concentration-time by 2 seconds to ensure the best shot possible.
Headshots offer the biggest advantage where Jin’s concentration time is replenished by half for every shot. If the player has an eagle eye, even large groups of enemies will be put down before they get within range to deal any damage. It’s not easy but it’s one of the most effective playing styles, dealing maximum damage without a scratch.
5 Broken Armor (Worst)
Possibly the worst armor in the game, this would mainly be used as a challenge. Trying to get through enemies with an armor that’s at the most basic level is only appealing to the most skilled warrior. Proving that they need no assistance or power-ups beyond their weapon, the armor offers nothing in the way of combat.
Not only useless in battle, but players also can’t even add dye to the armor to try and make it look any better. A minimalist approach, even those that wanted to see it through to the end can’t upgrade it in any way. Every hit would be felt, with no defense above a few plates of metal. The only thing more impressive would be completing it in the birthday suit.
4 Kensei (Best)
The Kensei armor is a specialist niche for those that use strictly ghost weapons, unless of course fashion is the main objective. Causing the damage of ghost weapons to increase by 30% and dropping the enemies attack power with a strike, it makes the combination lethal when fighting any opponent.
It will also ramp up Jin’s resolve by 30%, allowing special moves and health restoration available much earlier in a fight. Players with a knack for battle can take this set to new heights by unleashing special moves regularly when they parry or kill an enemy. The slick aesthetic is just a bonus, letting the other samurai know who’s boss before a sword is even drawn.
3 Ronin Attire (Worst)
Dropping the protection aspect and driving forward with a 30% percent increase in melee damage, the Ronin Attire is for those that are defensively sound. Not offering anything in the way of protection and basically acting as a cover-up for the clumsier samurai among us, it will reduce detection time after a player has been spotted by the enemy.
While it does negate some clumsy gameplay, it offers little in the way of combat. Sporting a rather plain black garb, the highlight of the outfit is a hat that increases in style as the piece is leveled up. Unless players are planning to plow ahead with a barrage of melee attacks, Ronin Attire is essentially a forgiving item for beginners.
2 Sakai (Best)
The damage dealer, Sakai Clan armor is for those that want to end a fight as quickly as possible. Once it’s maxed out, it will take enemies half the time before they fall in defeat. Those that interrupt an attack with kunai will find that often Jin only has to make them vulnerable once to take them out.
Also the armor of choice for those that want to follow an honorable path, it will massively benefit the player in standoff one on ones. Allowing the player to accumulate up to 5 kills, it will also crank up the chance to terrify nearby enemies by 25%. The defensive player will likely lean towards this armor and it boasts a unique style that will stand out among the rest.
1 Mongol Commander (Worst)
Some armors are simply in the bottom 5 only because they got beat out for the top spot. Overall the Mongol Commander Armour isn’t a bad choice, its advantages are just beaten out by the top 5 in the game. Its tanking stats are much like the Samurai Clan, buffing health and damage reduction in a major way.
It does have the advantage of disguising the player in a world of enemies, reducing detection speed and giving Jin a certain degree of camouflage outside of battle. It just isn’t as good at any of these things as some of the other pieces, leaving at the top of the bottom. The best of the bad and a good choice if the player is hoping to go unnoticed in broad daylight.
