Throughout video games, there exist beloved and iconic sequences that forever remain in the memory of players – moments that are spoken about with reverence even decades after players first experienced them. Super Mario Bros.’ very first stage is indication of this with Level 1-1 being recreated in a multitude of ways. Another iconic franchise that gets is due with recreations is Valve’s Half-Life series, and an upcoming project is looking to bring a whole new way to play a classic sequence.
While most players remember the original Half-Life‘s opening, Half-Life 2‘s is just as fondly remembered by those who continued the saga of Gordon Freeman. One team of modders is taking that opening sequence and bringing it to a whole new dimension with what they have named “Project 17.”
Project 17 is where the entire opening chapter of Half-Life 2 is recreated within the franchise’s recent and critically acclaimed entry of Half-Life: Alyx. This means that the team will not only be using the engine to make Half-Life 2 look modern, but making it all playable in VR. The official Project 17 website explains that the goal of the mod is to “recreate the iconic experiences from Valve Software’s Half-Life 2, rebuilt for VR.” The team also mentions that this isn’t just about recreation, but providing tools for the Half-Life: Alyx modding community.
On the Frequently Asked Questions section of the website, the team provided further details on the goal and scope of the project. Project 17 is only intended to recreate the “Point Insertion” chapter of Half-Life 2. Since the Half-Life: Alyx modding scene is still relatively new despite some impressive recreations like P.T. with the VR title, the team felt a full remake was not possible given the current access of tools needed to make it a reality.
The opening to Half-Life 2 may not hold the same weight and reverence as its predecessor did, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t held a similar impact. It is so beloved by fans that Project 17 isn’t actually the first attempt at bringing the opening of Half-Life 2 to an entirely new engine, or in this case, an entirely new gameplay experience. Back in March, just days after the long anticipated release of of Valve’s flagship VR title, another player attempted to recreate the opening of Half-Life 2 within Half-Life: Alyx.
The team did leave one final answer, which was likely the first thing for anyone excited after seeing the trailer. With regards to when Project 17 will be available to play, the response was a simple yet effective: “When it’s ready.”
Half-Life: Alyx is available now for PC.
