Games are full of great ideas, but sometimes fans come up with their own ideas that are perfect fit as well. That is exactly what happened today when a fan shared their idea for ultimate accelerants in Apex Legends.
In Apex Legends, the ultimate accelerant allows the player to recharge some or all of their legend’s ultimate ability, like Rampart’s mounted turret that had a crazy exploit recently. Grenades and healing items are both accessible via the d-pad, but when a player wants to use an ultimate accelerant, they have to open up the full menu and scroll over to the item then press a button to use it.
Doing so is not difficult, but in the middle of a heated fight with another team, fumbling through the menus to find an ultimate accelerant wastes precious seconds, time in Apex Legends that could be used better elsewhere. Which is what gave Reddit user Scumbag-Breeze their great idea.
The Redditor suggests that the buttons that normally activate a legend’s ultimate can instead use an ultimate accelerant when the ultimate is not ready to be deployed. So by pressing L1 and R1 on PlayStation, L and R on an Xbox controller (or a Switch Joy-con set next month, if the rumors of a Apex Legends Switch release are accurate) there would be no more fumbling through menus.
Some pointed out in the comments that some sort of buffer would be needed to be added to protect those who mash the two buttons in the seconds before their ultimate is ready, so they can use it as soon as possible without deploying an ultimate accelerant at 98% and getting killed. But having to hold the two buttons for a second or two instead works just as well.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version coming this fall.
