Back in 2003, IO Interactive and Electronic Arts released Freedom Fighters, a tactical third-person shooter that earned strong reviews at the time of its release, with particular praise given to its multiplayer mode and impressive squad AI. The game became a cult classic, with many fans calling for a Freedom Fighters 2 in the years since. While a Freedom Fighters sequel hasn’t been announced, the original game is making a comeback of sorts.
IO Interactive has re-released Freedom Fighters on PC, updating the game so that it runs well on modern gaming rigs. This marks the first time that Freedom Fighters has been released digitally, and it will be the first opportunity many modern gamers have to play it. Freedom Fighters is now available on a variety of digital storefronts, including Steam and GOG. Freedom Fighters is available at a 33% discount at launch, making it available for just under $10, plus the GOG version is DRM-free.
In the meantime, fans will no doubt have their fingers crossed that this will mean an even bigger comeback is in store for Freedom Fighters. While nothing has been announced, it would be nice to see the classic game released for modern gaming consoles as well, so console gamers can get in on the nostalgia trip, too. And if this re-release is successful, hopefully it could result in a proper Freedom Fighters sequel finally being made.
Currently, chances are higher than usual that a Freedom Fighters sequel could potentially happen. When IO Interactive split from Square Enix, it retained the rights to the Freedom Fighters franchise, meaning its future is entirely in the company’s hands. Then again, it’s safe to say that IO Interactive is plenty busy at the moment, and so those hoping to see more Freedom Fighters shouldn’t expect any big announcements anytime soon.
Right now, IO Interactive is busy developing Hitman 3, which is set to launch for current- as well as next-generation consoles on January 20, 2021. Not only that, but the studio is also working on a VR mode for Hitman 3, and so its plate may be pretty full. What it plans on doing after Hitman 3 wraps up development remains to be seen, but a Freedom Fighters sequel is a possibility, especially since the studio didn’t retain the rights to all of its IP when it left Square Enix.
Square Enix still owns the rights to Kane & Lynch, and so IO pretty much just has Hitman and Freedom Fighters under its umbrella. Of course, it may move forward with a completely original IP instead, and so fans should keep that in mind as well.
Freedom Fighters is available now for GameCube, PC, PS2, and Xbox.
