Anyone familiar with titles by Supergiant Games knows the developer loves fusing story with its gameplay, often accompanied by great music. Supergiant even released an orchestral album for its 10th anniversary, a move that makes sense considering the success of its latest game: Hades.
Those familiar with Hades know well why it has become a hit. The game is a roguelite dungeon crawler where players take control of Zagreus, prince of the Underworld. The goal is to escape the Underworld itself, which Zagreus does (or fails to do) with the help of divine weapons called the Infernal Arms that can take on different aspects, each with their own special powers. This includes Hidden Aspects, which require specific conditions before they become available. Each weapon has one Hidden Aspect, with newest Twin Fists of Malphon’s Aspect of Gilgamesh being tricky to unlock.
The first step to unlocking the Aspect of Gilgamesh is to unlock the weapon it serves: The Twin Fists of Malphon. The Fists become available to unlock as the game is played, and require eight Chthonic Keys to unlock.
The Fated List, which gives rewards for specific accomplishments, is available from the House Contractor, and will likely be an early purchase for most players.
One of the most important tips to know about Hades is that there are no objectively “bad” Infernal Arms. Each one suits a different playstyle, and each works in a different niche, so they are worth experimenting with. With this in mind, the next step is to unlock at least five different Infernal Arms Aspects.
The Aspect of Guan-Yu was the first Hidden Aspect introduced, and is necessary for unlocking the others. This information was brought to light by Steam players after Hades left its Epic Games Store exclusivity. After five aspects are unlocked, and the final boss is fought at least once (whether or not it’s beaten), speak to Achilles. It may require a few conversations, but eventually he’ll offer a code phrase. Say that phrase to Varatha the Eternal Spear to unlock the Aspect of Guan-Yu.
After unlocking the Aspect of Guan-Yu, feed Titan Blood to the Fists. In this case, the Titan Blood must be invested in powering up Aspects, as just spending it to unlock the Aspects is not enough. Some may be surprised that weapons feeding on blood play prominently in a game that surprise launched for the Switch, but Hades leans into its darker aspects.
The final step is finding Asterius, one of the two bosses of Elysium that can also be fought as a mini-boss. This is down to luck, so look for doors with skulls under the rewards in Elysium. He must be spoken to while wielding the Twin Fists. It requires several encounters to get the Minotaur to tell his story, but a code phrase will be offered at the end. Speak it to the Twin Fists to unlock the weapon, just one of many hidden secrets that has contributed to Hades‘ warm reception in critical reviews.
Hades is available for PC and Switch.
