PlayStation Fans Call for Sony to Buy Konami As Response to Microsoft Bethesda Acquisition

Earlier this morning, Microsoft dropped a bombshell when it was announced that it purchased ZeniMax Media, effectively acquiring game publisher Bethesda in the process. The Microsoft Bethesda acquisition essentially means that the Xbox brand could potentially make titles like the upcoming Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 Xbox console exclusive, sending major ripple effects throughout the gaming industry.

Understandably, there are some PlayStation fans who are upset by this news, and while it’s still possible games like Elder Scrolls 6 will come to PS5 (not unlike how Minecraft is still available on non-Xbox platforms), many on Twitter are already calling on Sony to make some kind of response. One of the top suggestions by fans, currently trending worldwide on Twitter, is that Sony purchase Japanese video game publisher Konami.

Konami has some of the most iconic video game IPs in history under its belt, including the likes of Metal Gear SolidCastlevania, and of course, Silent Hill. There had been rumors in the past that Sony was going to acquire Konami’s IP, but nothing ever materialized. It seems like an unlikely development at this point, but that doesn’t mean Sony won’t get some exclusive Konami deals in the future.

In fact, one of the most persistent rumors about Sony and Konami claims that the companies have reached a deal to develop a Silent Hill PS5 exclusive game. Apparently, this unannounced Silent Hill game is in development at Sony’s Japan studio, and it is expected to be revealed later this year. Whether or not there’s any truth to those rumors remains to be seen, but if so, it does suggest a strong working relationship between Sony and Konami that could theoretically turn into something more substantial down the line.

Sony has more studio acquisitions planned, but it’s unclear if they will be anything on the scale of Microsoft buying Bethesda. The acquisition was a huge strategic move on the part of Microsoft, and has completely shifted the dynamic of the next-generation console wars. One would think Sony would like to respond in kind, but maybe it is confident in the games it has already revealed for PS5, as well as its upcoming slate of titles.

In the meantime, it’s unclear if Sony will be hosting any additional PS5 Showcase events between now and the PlayStation 5 release date of November 12. However, fans can count on the company to have some big announcements in the future, even if they aren’t quite as massive as Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda.
