Super Smash Bros. Fighters Pass DLC Character News Might Be Right Around the Corner

After what many felt to be months of silence, Nintendo has recently been dropping major bombshells in the form of the long-rumored Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. But fans of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have been feeling left out with how little news there has been about that title’s upcoming DLC.

It’s been three months since Min Min from ARMS was announced and released as the first fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s second Fighters Pass, leaving five characters still to be revealed. Since then, we’ve had no word on when the next character will be revealed. Now, some fans are convinced that it could finally happen sooner than expected.

The supposed evidence for this is a new Nintendo advert that is currently running in 7-Eleven stores in Japan and will apparently remain until October 4th. The theory is that this means the next DLC character will be announced within the next couple of weeks, possibly just before the ad is removed.

On the surface, this seems like a bit of a stretch, but late September/early October would make sense for a character release. So far, new DLC characters have been added to the game within two – three months of each other. For example, Persona 5‘s Joker released in April of 2019, with the Hero from Dragon Quest added in July, followed by Banjo and Kazooie in September.

The other reason why fans are convinced this means a new character is coming is because something similar happened before with Fire Emblem: Three Houses’ Byleth. Another Nintendo ad that prominently featured the first Fighters Pass went up before Byleth’s announcement. The ad ran until February 2nd, with Byleth’s reveal taking place on January 16th.

While this is only a theory, it would make sense for Nintendo to announce the next character at least before the end of the year. But there is always the possibility that it may come later than planned, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic disrupting work on game development, something director Masahiro Sakurai previously warned about.

As for who the next character could be, there have been so many rumors and purported ‘leaks’ that it’s almost impossible to predict. As always, everyone has their own theories. With the recent Monster Hunter announcements for Switch, some think a Hunter will be next, especially since iconic monster Rathalos is already in the game as an Assist Trophy and boss fight.
