Microsoft’s Xbox Design Lab gives players full control over customizing Xbox One controllers using different color combinations. Individual parts can be customized, including the controller’s bumpers, sticks, buttons, and body. With over 40 colors to choose from with each part, billions of combinations can be created for any player’s signature controller. Unfortunately, the Microsoft service is being temporarily shut down.
Starting on October 14, 2020, Xbox Design Lab will be temporarily shut down until sometime in 2021. The Microsoft service currently only offers Xbox One controllers, however, the temporary shutdown is most likely to prepare for offering customized Xbox Series X controllers.
Although it is not known when Xbox Design Lab will re-open, the shutdown will give enough time to expand customization to Xbox Series X controllers. The Xbox Series X controller may look very similar to the Xbox One controller, however, it will have noticeable improvements.
The Xbox Series X controller will have functional improvements such as rounded triggers, a dot pattern on bumpers and triggers, a new d-pad design, and carefully sculpted grips for a wider range of hand sizes. While these functional changes will help improve comfort and gameplay, the improvements also pose a challenge for Xbox Design Lab to adapt to the new design to provide the most customization options possible.
The Xbox Series X will support Xbox One controllers, so players who have already purchased or plan to purchase a customized Xbox Design Labs controller will be able to use it on the new console. While the Xbox Series X controller does boast some impressive functionality improvements as well as improved latency, the Xbox One controller from Xbox Design Labs will most likely be cheaper than the potential customization of an Xbox Series X controller.
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will release on November 10, and pre-orders will launch September 22, so players still have time to customize an Xbox One controller to use on the new console when it releases. Fans who want to customize an Xbox Series X controller may have to wait for several months after the console releases for Xbox Design Labs to re-open. The timing of the temporary shutdown points to restructuring to offer a new product, but time will tell if the Microsoft service will expand its selection, or if it has to drop any of the currently available controllers to introduce new options to the design service.
