After the announcement of Super Mario 3D All-Stars to commemorate the iconic plumber’s 35th anniversary, fans are clamoring over which other game franchises should get the get the same treatment. With the 3D All-Stars package including the classic and beloved Super Mario Galaxy, fans have gotten rattled over the potential future of the series.
As Galaxy has one of the greatest sequels of all time and is one of Mario’s highest ranked games on Metacritic, its exclusion from 3D All-Stars has seen fans vent in creative ways. And for good measure, the fans have entertained themselves by theorizing over a potential second sequel in the Galaxy series, too.
9 Galaxy All-Stars
In a perfect world, Super Mario 3D All-Stars would not only include Mario Galaxy 2, a game that was woefully omitted from the package for no apparent reason, but also Mario Galaxy 3, a game that isn’t even in development yet but should be.
Considering how the three games included in the real 3D All-Stars game have no new content and that leaves a lot to be desired, this is still somewhat of a stretch.
8 Water Physics
This is what Nintendo does best. Though there are loads of video games with the goofiest physics, nothing can beat gliding around on a purple sting ray on the surface of water which is just circulating in the clouds, completely ignoring gravity of any kind.
This is one of the most fun mini games in any game, and it only took defying physics in every possible way for it to happen. Once again, it’s the Nintendo logic that turns the bizarre in to restless, endlessly meme-able fun.
7 Insane Difficulty
Though Galaxy might not make the list of the hardest Mario games, it is an extremely hard game in a franchise notorious for hard games. This level is possibly the hardest in the game, and though it may be for children while Dark Souls is for adults, it doesn’t mean Galaxy is any less difficult than the latter game.
The Lava Spire Daredevil Run has definitely caused more casualties too, as the amalgam of adrenaline and frustration of players sent many Wii controllers flying out of players’ hands.
6 The Spidey Meme
Luigi might be the scapegoat of the Super Mario franchise, but there are actually a lot of things that he can do that Mario can’t. In Super Mario Galaxy, once the player has beaten they game, they are given the option to replay it as Luigi.
In one level, Mario must save Luigi— but when the player plays as Luigi, the NPC that Luigi must save is still somehow Luigi rather than Mario or someone else, which makes for this ridiculous meme. The weird thing is, the two Luigis look pretty different, and one has clearly been working out and has much better posture than the other.
5 The Irishman
Though being a scumbag murderer isn’t one of his real personality traits, Mario was quick enough to kill off one of his own games. This scene in The Irishman takes place right before Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino, gets murdered by the three other people in the car.
Hilariously, a fan has labelled Super Mario Galaxy 2 as Hoffa, as it has been unfairly excluded from the Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundle, whereas the other three games get to live on.
4 That Master Luma Moment
The moment that Master Luma said goodbye to Mario right before thousands of Lumas disappeared in to a black hole to save the universe must have been the first time children realized the emotional toll video games could have on them.
All those kids— now adults— have to hear to remind them of that trying time is the overwhelmingly sad Luma Theme. It was completely heartbreaking, and that’s why this meme might be too close to the truth to be funny.
3 The Long Wait
Super Mario Galaxy 3 could be interchangeable with Super Mario Sunshine 2 in this meme, as fans have also been waiting for the latter for 20 years now, but Galaxy 3 has been the more highly-desired sequel of the two.
It has now been more than ten years since the second entry in the Galaxy series, and as Nintendo tends to keep their cards close to their chest, we haven’t heard so much as a peep about a sequel. Fans could be great grandfathers before Galaxy 3 gets released, if it ever does.
2 Two And A Half Marios
Another meme making light of Galaxy 2 being missing from the 3D All-Stars pack, but this time making fun of Nintendo, as if it was on their mind but the company just happened to forget to include it at the last minute. With Mario Galaxy 2 being one of the most beloved Super Mario games of all time, comparing it to forgetting to pick up a child couldn’t be any more apt.
1 “G2 Is Real”
In Super Mario 64, Luigi was mysteriously absent from the game, but in this bed of water in the game is an inscription that says, “L Is Real 2401.” This made fans believe that once they had collected 2401 stars and returned to the water, Luigi would appear, and it has become one of the most confusing conspiracy theories in video games.
Now, because of the absence of Super Mario Galaxy 2 from 3D All-Stars, a fan has amazingly edited the inscription to say, “G2 Is Real.” Maybe when players complete Mario 64 in the new Switch game, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will appear. If not, there’s always DLC…
