Prime Day at Amazon can mean big discounts for gamers, but the annual event, typically held every summer, was put on hold thanks to the pandemic. It will now arrive this fall, according to insiders. Prepare that wallet, because Prime Day is coming.
According to multiple people with knowledge of what’s happening within Amazon, Prime Day will begin Tuesday, Oct. 13. The sources were unable to confirm how long the event would last, though it is usually a few days. Reddit user u/ViperVisor, an Amazon worker, backs up this claim, saying that an internal newsletter has announced a vacation blackout from Oct. 13 – 20, which fits the leaked date. Without official word from Amazon, however, it’s best not to take this information as gospel.
When the sale does finally come along (and it certainly will), expect Prime Day deals that range from games to consoles, and even graphics cards. Amazon tends to not reveal exactly what’s going to be discounted, so it’s always worth a gander to find out what’s being offered. Prime Day isn’t just for games, though.
Every department within the massive site will have some sort of sale, including electronics, where buyers might be able to snag a discounted 4K TV to pair with any games they might purchase. The event is so big that sometimes other retailers get in on the action. Last year, Walmart had its own gaming deals during Prime Day.
In related news, Amazon was one of the retailers who accepted preorders for Sony’s next-generation console after last week’s PlayStation 5 Showcase Event. During the show, several new titles were announced and audiences got thorough looks at many of the games coming to the console. The biggest news of the night was the reveal of the console’s price and the date people could pre-order. It was supposed to be the day after the event, but retailers got antsy, opening pre-orders up early and causing absolute chaos in the gaming community. Not expecting this turn of events, most people didn’t get to preorder and many that did were scalpers, posting the console on eBay for often twice what it’s worth.
Amazon patiently waited until nearly midnight PST to open up its preorders and the stock was gone within minutes. Since this is the first round of pre-orders, those lucky enough to secure one are expecting to receive their console on launch day, but that may not happen for those who ordered through Amazon. The company sent out a wave of emails stating that PS5 pre-orders may not arrive on launch day, claiming it was due to high demand. This could mean either Amazon took too many orders or it doesn’t have enough stock to fulfill orders. Either way, it’s not great news.
