Shown off during Gamescom last month, Reflector Entertainment debuted its newest IP Unknown 9, with the game standing as an introduction to an ambitious new transmedia universe which will span into novels, podcasts, and more. It’s undeniably a huge project with a lot of different parts to manage, as the game’s supernatural world has the scope to expand into something far bigger than the average video game narrative.
Something on this scale requires a hefty budget to pull off right, which is something Reflector evidently agrees with as the team has just been acquired by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe. The publisher made the announcement late last week, revealing that the acquisition is the next step in its attempt to bringing more Western developers into the fold.
In regards to the acquisition, the publisher’s COO Amand Muller stated, “The creative vision and development capacity of Reflector Entertainment will boost BNEE’s ability to craft breathtaking experiences over the years. We look forward to working with such a skilled team, and to welcome them to the BNE family.” As for what the new acquisition will mean for for Unknown 9, Muller claimed it “will enable Reflector Entertainment to deepen its transmedia vision,” seemingly giving it more funding to expand upon the idea. Speaking to GameDaily.biz, Reflector Entertainment CEO Alexandre Amancio claimed that the deal means the studio “will now benefit from the means and the resources to amplify its homegrown IP on an international scale.”
For those who missed the reveal of Unknown 9, the game offers an entry point into what Reflector call a “story world,” allowing players to be immersed into a new universe through several forms of media. While the initial game, titled Awakening, will be a comprehensive introduction to this world, it’ll expand in the months and years following its release with comic books, novels, scripted podcasts, and seemingly much more. The initial trailer seems to indicate that the story will center around paranormal powers and the occult, with the reveal showing a young Indian girl battling back against bullies on the streets of Kalkata by shifting into a spiritual dimension.
There’s no denying that the game and its tantalizing multimedia format has a lot of promise, so hearing that Bandai Namco will be helping the team capitalize on its vision is a good sign that it’ll live up to its potential. The publisher has some more games on the way while fans wait, however, with The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope debuting this Halloween and Little Nightmares 2 coming early next year.
