Dirt 5 Dev Claims Graphical Scaling for the Xbox Series S Is ‘Easy’

Next generation consoles are right around the corner, and with price points for the PS5 and Xbox Series S and X out, gamers are trying to decide which console suits their needs best. The Xbox Series S comes in at an attractive $299 USD, but some have wondered if that lower cost means a lower level of performance. While some developers are worried that the Xbox Series S lack power, in an interview with Digital Foundry, Dirt 5 technical director David Springate explains how easy it is to optimize a game for the Series S.

Dirt 5, the fast-paced arcade racer from Codemasters, is set to be a launch title for Xbox Series S and X alongside current gen iterations of the game. Going with a multi-platform release means that the developer has had to tweak the game to run the best it can on each console. This makes the interview with Springate a worthwhile one to pay attention to for gamers still on the fence between a Series S or Series X.

In the interview, Springate explains how Microsoft pitched the different Xbox consoles, with the main difference being that for the Series S, his team needed to focus on running the game at 1440p instead of 4K. With that clear goal to work with, Springate and his team found it easy to adapt to the power unit of the Series S, not feeling limited by the specs of the more affordable console.

Dirt 5 has been teasing game modes and assets in the lead up to release, with the Vampire car in Playgrounds mode taking the spotlight. Some footage shown has been taken from the Series S, which Springate proudly promotes as looking quite sharp. He explains that running on the Series S, the game may have slightly fewer textures or it may dial back crowd size, but he wonders if those couple of differences matter for a cost-conscious gamer.

By dialing back resolution and other graphical elements just a touch, the game can stay locked in at 60 FPS or higher and keep running smoothly at 1440p. By customizing the builds for each console with a few easy tweaks in the coding, Springate hopes to offer the optimal experience for whichever console a gamer chooses to buy Dirt 5 on.

While Springate and Codemasters seem to be putting a fair amount of thought into their multi-platform release, this might not be the case for every game that is offered on a range of systems. There are concerns that the Xbox Series S may be underpowered in the long term. If a developer doesn’t consider the potential limitations of the Series S, games could run into performance issues on the console.

This is certainly something for gamers to consider as the console launch draws closer. With pre-orders starting soon, getting either the Series S or Series X could be difficult if reports from Australia are any indication.

Dirt 5 will be released November 6 for PS4 & Xbox One, November 10 for Xbox Series S & X, November 12 for PS5, and a 2021 release for Stadia.
